EMMA SMITH QUARTET/IAN SHAW QUARTET FEAT JACQUI DANKWORTH/LILLIAN BOUTTE
FRIDAY MAY 24 | 8:45pm |£16
8:45pm EMMA SMITH Emma is without question one of the leading Jazz vocalists of her generation, singing with a poise and facility that many singers twice her age would kill for. She is a third generation Jazz musician, her grandfather Chris Smith senior played trombone with Tubby Hayes, Oscar Peterson and Frank Sinatra, her father, trumpeter Chris Smith Jnr, writes and arranges for the likes of the BBC Big Band, and her mother, Simone, is an excellent sax player. So not too surprising then that she did her first gig when she was 14, started performing with NYJO when she was 15 and received a scholarship to the Purcell School of Music when she was 16, the first ever jazz singing student to do so. She is now a regular performer in many of London’s top jazz venues, singing her impressive original songs (as featured on her brilliant debut CD, The Huntress) with some classic Jazz standards too. A truly exceptional young talent.
"... A precocious talent who has produced an exceptional debut album" All About Jazz
10:00pm IAN SHAW WITH SPECIAL GUEST JACQUI DANKWORTH One of Europe’s great male jazz vocalists. Named Best Vocalist of the year twice(!) at the BBC Jazz Awards, multi Award Winning Ian Shaw is a huge talent with the most engaging personality and an ability to make every song his own. Described as “the voice of the decade” it is not by chance that he was the first British Jazz vocalist to be signed to American label Milestone, which resulted in a number of highly acclaimed US recordings. Watch out for his last two releases on Splash Point Records, “The Abbey Road Sessions”, a fabulous collection showcasing his beautiful, uniquely crafted versions of favourite songs and “A Ghost in Every Bar” an album that celebrates the lyrics of the wonderful Fran Landesman. This evening Ian’s Special Guest will be the brilliant Jacqui Dankworth. Described by the Observor as “One of the most expressive and flexible voices of her generation Jacqui Dankworth comes from an illustrious family of Jazz musicians. Work alongside the likes of Courtney Pine, the BBC Big Band and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra plus numerous CD recordings, Radio exposure and TV and Film scores have unquestionably established her as one of this country’s finest singers. Her 2006 nomination as Jazz Vocalist of the Year for the BBC Jazz Awards was a worthy acknowledgement of her talent, which combined with her sophisticated style and musical intelligence make her appearances quite electrifying.
