NIGEL HITCHCOCK QUARTET/TONY O'MALLEY/ HAMISH STUART BAND
SUNDAY MAY 26| 7:45pm |£15
7:45pm NIGEL HITCHCOCK QUARTET Nigel is unquestionably one of the finest saxophonists of his generation. This multi-award winning musician was lead alto with NYJO at the age of 12, graduating to busy professional session musician by the time he was 16. He has been a featured player with some of the finest musicians in the World, including work with the likes of Ray Charles, Tom Jones and Robbie Williams and jazz musicians such as Stan Tracey and Claire Martin. In more recent years he has also added composing and arranging to his accomplishments, including works for full-scale orchestra. A fantastic post-bop player his remarkable technique and ferocious attack make him one of the most impressive saxophonists in World Jazz.
8:45pm TONY O’MALLEY is unquestionably one of the most charismatic vocalists working in the UK. A featured performer since the late 60s, his CV is vast and includes stints with the iconic band 10CC and his own seminal Jazz/Funk band Kokomo. His brand of jazz-tinged contemporary soul and blues is really stunning, with his fabulous, smoky, velvety growl of a voice delivering original material and some covers in his inimitable style. With 7 CDs to his name, Tony has established himself as one of the most original and powerful performers on the scene today, with a fan base that reaches around the world. Not surprisingly his regular band features some of the finest Groove musicians around including guitarists Neil Hubbard (Kokomo) and Adam Phillips (Hamish Stuart, Tina Turner) and drummer Ash Soan (Will Young, Robbie Williams). If you like contemporary R&B vocals with a touch of Jazz in the Blues Brothers style, then this is definitely for you.
10:00pm HAMISH STUART Probably best known for his work as the original lead singer/guitarist with The Average White Band, Hamish has had an illustrious career as both songwriter and performer. He has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, George Benson and Chaka Khan (for whom he wrote the No. 1 chart hit Whatcha Gonna Do For Me) culminating in six years with the Paul McCartney Band. Although still guesting in other people’s bands from time to time (several tours with Ringo Starr for instance) since ’94 he has largely led his own band, which is a super-group in every sense of the word and very much out of the R&B tradition, although considerably more sophisticated than the 70’s version. It’s been a while since Hamish played the Club and we’re really looking forward to his return as he’s very much musical “family” to us here.
“We love Stuart, the funky ex-Average White Band singer and rhythm guitarist with Chaka Khan, George Benson etc. He's still playing a superior blend of soul and jazz with a great band while his voice has that unique smoky soul allure.” Time Out
