7:45pm JOHN PARRICELLI/MARK LOCKHEART QUARTET. Mark Lockheart is an award winning tenor sax player who first made his name working with seminal band Loose Tubes in the eighties and whose mastery of modern jazz has kept him at the forefront of the music ever since. Co-founder of the universally regarded “The Perfect Houseplants” Mark has toured and recorded with Django Bates, Mike Gibbs, Mark Anthony Turnage, his own 11 piece “Scratch Band” as well as Seb Rochford’s highly acclaimed “Polar Bear”. He is also a highly respected educator, writer and arranger. "Lockheart is a consummate saxophonist and an original and versatile composer" The Rough Guide to Jazz; “inspired and imaginative” The Times; “compelling” Guardian. John Parricelli rose to fame as one of the founders of Loose Tubes and since then has pursued a varied career working with numerous well respected and influential jazz musicians including Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone and Lee Konitz as well as performing as a session musician for some of the biggest pop artists around (Leona Lewis, Mike Oldfield). His playing is universally admired and respected throughout the UK Jazz scene.
8:45pm GWILYM SIMCOCK TRIO A multi-Award winning pianist, Gwilym is unquestionably one of the finest players of his generation. Fluent and highly inventive his powerful piano playing adds class to any group that he’s in. He has worked with the likes of Bill Bruford, Kyle Eastwood, Kenny Wheeler and Lee Konitz on a dazzling cv and it’s a testament to his remarkable abilities that he has already won the Perrier, BBC Jazz and British Jazz Rising Star Awards and is a Radio 3 “New Generation Artist” (the first Jazz musician to receive this accolade). He was voted “Jazz Musician of the Year” at the 2007 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and been nominated for two more BBC Jazz Awards. You get the idea – he’s very, very good! Not content with being a great player Gwilym also has a burgeoning career as a composer, including the highly acclaimed live televised performance (BBC 2) of his Jazz/Contemporary Classical piece “Progressions” with the BBC Concert Orchestra as part of the 2008 BBC Proms season. Now established as an International Artist of considerable standing, Chick Corea described him as “A creative genius”, Gwilym is rightly considered to be one of the most exciting talents to emerge in recent years.
9:45pm IAIN BALLAMY’S “ANORAK”. Iain Ballamy is an Award winning saxophonist who is one of the most interesting and creative players on the World Jazz stage. A leading UK musician since his time with “Loose Tubes” and the Bill Bruford Band in the mid 80’s, Iain’s cv reads like a who’s who of Jazz, including the likes of Hermeto Pascoal, Gil Evans and long time collaborator Django Bates. He has appeared at numerous International Festivals and venues and can be heard on over 40 CDs. Parallel to his international jazz career Iain has also pursued his interest in world music, playing concerts in India and Europe and forging strong working relationships with renowned musicians from Hungary, Norway, Spain, Sudan and Brazil. Not surprisingly Iain is a recipient of the Award For Innovation at the BBC Jazz Awards. A special performer who combines intense creativity, broad musical influences and winning humour all in one, unique, style. Also featured are the brilliant pianist Gareth Williams, the highly respected bass player Steve Watts and iconic drummer Martin France.
10:45pm KIT DOWNES QUARTET feat JULIAN SIEGEL. **Winner BBC Jazz Awards 2008/9** “Mercury Nominee 2010”. Although still relatively new to the UK Jazz scene this award winning pianist has already made quite an impact. His fluent, highly creative, focused playing has been heard with the likes of “Troyka”, Clark Tracy, Seb Rochford, Gilad Atzmon, Fraud and Acoustic Ladyland. He first came to prominence, while still a student, with the highly successful band “Empirical” that lead to his International recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. Since leaving Empirical at the end of 2008 Kit has gone from strength to strength, winning the BBC ‘Rising Star’ Award in 2008, being nominated for a British Jazz Award in both 2008 and 2009 and winning a 'Yamaha Jazz Scholarship' Award in 2009. A reflection of just how good he is can be seen from his trio’s nomination for the highly prestigious Mercury Prize in 2010, a rare honour for a Jazz trio. Tonight Kit’s Special Guest will be the multi-award winning saxophonist Julian Siegel. In recent years Julian has established himself as a powerful player and individual composer on the flourishing UK and European Jazz Scene. His varied musical life has included performances with the likes of Hermeto Pascoal, Kenny Wheeler, Django Bates and Norma Winstone and his fluent and creative improvising skills can be heard with a variety of his own excellent bands.
