THURSDAY 11th SERIOUS MUSIC PRESENTS ***YARON HERMAN***

The 606 Club is very pleased to welcome, in association with Serious Music, International piano sensation Yaron Herman. An exceptional pianist whose rapid rise to fame around the world, impressive international schedule of concerts (100s of gigs played in dozens of different countries) and armfuls of awards confirm that he is an outstanding performer and an incredibly talented musician. Still a young musician (only just 30), his success came very quickly: initially Herman left his native Israel at 19 to study at Berklee, but instead ended up in Paris where he secured a music contract within 24 hours of arrival.  His talent and enthusiasm meant he quickly became the pianist on the European scene and had recorded his first album by the age of 21.  His very original interpretations of classic jazz and pop tunes as well as his own compositions have gained him a wide variety of fans and he has been credited with introducing a whole new audience to jazz (his unbelievable version of Britney Spears “Toxic” has been lauded by jazz fans and Britney fans alike!).  Such is his popularity, a concert he performed in Belgrade last year was broadcast live in 39 countries – something almost unheard of in the jazz world. This is an outstanding gig from an international jazz superstar that you really cannot afford to miss!

A fixture on the UK jazz scene for many years it’s a pleasure to welcome this fluent and creative player to the Club. The quartet Dave is leading tonight will feature the guitarist Terry Smith and the great bass player Mick Hutton.  Dave’s Special Guest tonight on drums is Tony Mann, who first played with Dave over 50 years ago when he was just 16 (it will be something of a reunion gig tonight!) and went on to play with Tubby Hayes, Dexter Gordon and Chet Baker amongst many other jazz legends. This is a lovely, laid back, gig from a fine modern jazz stylist.

NIC FRANCE with JOHN PARRICELLI and PATRICK BETTISON One of the most respected drummers of his generation it is with great pleasure that we welcome 606 Club regular Nic France to the Club with, for the first time, his own trio. A “first call” player for so many musicians Nic first came to London in the early 80’s and was quickly immersed in the Jazz scene, working with the likes of Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, the iconic big band “Loose Tubes” and the Ronnie Scott Quintet. However his powerful playing and impeccable time and approach was soon picked up and it wasn’t long before he was working and touring with the likes of Bill Withers, Working Week and Tanita Tikaram. Since then he has worked constantly in an eclectic variety of musical settings, an excellent Jazz drummer he is also a brilliant “Groove” player, a skilled Latin player and one of the few modern jazz drummers who can also play authentic Brazilian rhythms, both on kit and percussion. As well as constant work on the Club, Festival and Concert circuit he also has had a formidable career in the studios and includes the likes of Pete Townsend, Thomas Dolby, Annie Lenox and Nigel Kennedy on a massive cv. To give some idea of his versatility his recent live work includes Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour, Jazz saxophonist Andy Shepard, South African Township band Mbawula, “Groove” icon Terry Callier and Julian Lloyd Webber’s “Boss Nova Band”. And of course he is best known at the Club as the regular drummer with the Jazz/Brazilian band “Samara”. Also featured in Nic’s trio tonight are guitarist John Parricelli and bass player Patrick Bettison.

“..this kind of music is critically dependent on pulse and Nic France’s drumming really floats the boat.”

Her talent was quickly recognised and she was soon performing with the Radio Belgrade Big Band as well as doing TV and radio broadcasts and touring and appearing in Clubs and Festivals around the country. In 1995 she received a scholarship to go to the Berklee College of Music in Boston and after graduating with a BM she settled permanently in New York. Since 2000 she has worked at many of the most prestigious venues in the City including the Jazz Standard, Scullers, the Iridium and Cecil’s and has used NY as a base from which to tour. Her terrific singing has garnered her numerous awards, including the Cleo Laine Award for Outstanding Musicianship and BRIO Award from the NY Arts Council and her debut album “Introducing Alma” was hailed as “striking” by Jazz Review, receiving airplay throughout the US, South America, Japan and Europe. Her latest album “The Hours”, from which she will be featuring many of the songs this evening, beautifully displays her song writing and arranging talents in addition to her exquisite singing. It has been universally well received, including glowing reviews in Downbeat, Jazz Times, Jazzwise and All About Jazz. I was so impressed when I heard her sitting in on pianist Simon Mulligan’s gig recently that I offered her this date as part of her European tour, a rare event here at the Club where we specialize primarily in UK based musicians. Highly recommended.
