Multi-award winning Swiss guitarist Nicolas Meier is one of the rising stars of the UK jazz scene. Following his scholarship to Berklee in Boston, USA, he returned to Switzerland in 1998 but a few years later decided to settle in London. He has toured extensively in Europe, sharing the bill with the likes of Elvin Jones, Brad Meldau, Trilok Gurtu and Bill Evans and in 2006 his band won the prestigious Grand Prize of The Jury and 1st Prize Jazz Guitar at Jazz a Juan Revelations.

Nicolas draws on a multitude of influences, jazz, flamenco, Latin and middle-eastern music and his trademark sound, as heard on his Naim albums, is a mixture of Pat Metheny influenced jazz & spicy Turkish & world music rhythms. Nicolas plays acoustic, fretted and fretless nylon and steel stings guitar, glissentar and baglama, crossing the borders of jazz, flamenco and oriental music to create a sound that is at once flowing and beautiful, powerful and unique. The quartet tonight features Demi Garcia on percussion and Pat Bettison on harmonica and bass.

“Meier's technique is phenomenal. Dextrous and vigorous, favoring giddily-fast fingered, serpentine single note runs, it is musicianly in the best sense of the word” All About Jazz

A multi-award winner he has produced nine albums to date of his own work and appeared on numerous sessions and festivals around the world.

Currently he is working with his own terrific quartet, a storming 10 piece band (the “Biggish” Band) for which he also writes and arranges, an organ-based 'groove' band (“Organic Grooves”) and with one of New York’s leading sax players, Eric Alexander, in a classic two sax 'hard bop' quintet performing on both sides of the Atlantic. This charismatic, powerhouse, Blues singer has established herself over recent years as one of the leading UK performers. Hugely respected on the Blues scene it is little surprise that she has been voted “Best UK Female Blues Vocalist” seven years in a row. Supported by a classic blues band this Liverpool based performer has an enviable reputation not just in the UK but all around Europe. It is a reflection of the high esteem with which she is held that she was chosen as one of the featured artists to launch Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture (just before Ringo Starr!). The Times report of that performance: “Connie Lush belted out I Put a Spell on You with a voice like a 3am whisky and enough electricity to power the national grid.” The Scotsman described her as “….a battle scarred sandpaper edged cross between Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, attacking barenuckle R&B and slow burn torch songs with equal power and passion”. Now that you can’t miss!

mon 5th PETER IND feat KIT DOWNES-piano

Bass player Peter Ind’s playing is universally admired and respected throughout the International Jazz scene. One of the most charismatic musicians on the scene today Peter emigrated to the USA in the early 50’s where his phenomenal technique and impressive musical ability led to work with Jazz greats such as Buddy Rich, Coleman Hawkins and Billie Holliday. He returned to the UK in the mid 60’s where he established himself as a performer and teacher of great distinction, adding a record label (Wave) to his achievements, and then, in the mid 80’s he also opened the internationally renowned “Bass Clef” Jazz Club in London, which he ran for more than 10 years. A very special gig this one, featuring pianist Kit Downes and David Preston on guitar.

“..full of wit and vigour… Ind's solos exploit his ever-resourceful technique and resonant tone” Evening Standard.

Tues 6th

dan reinstein American born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off from his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, sax playing again.

Also featured tonight are terrific musicians Shanti Paul Jayasinha - trumpet and Tim Lapthorne - piano.

DILL KATZ Dill Katz makes an appearance later with his regular quartet, playing the more contemporary side of the spectrum. Dill, frequently referred to as a “bass legend”, is one of the most experienced players on the scene today, having pioneered the use of the fretless bass in the mid sixties, and whose work includes stints with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thompson’s band “Paraphernalia” and Afro/Jazz band “District Six”. This gig also features the excellent saxophone playing of Harrison Smith.

Tonight is a special night showcasing the culumination of a very exciting three-year project. In 2008, Yamaha UK in partnership with Classic FM, supported by Jazzwise magazine and the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group set up a three-year scholarship programme. The scholars recieve financial support with performance and recording opportunities, and so are helped on their way to becoming the next generation of jazz musicians. Six major UK music colleges chose one performer each from their jazz course to enrol on the programme, and as part of their scholarship the six successful musicians each got to record for a brand new CD. It is this CD, “YAMAHA NEW JAZZ SESSIONS”, that we are launching tonight.

The six musicians will perform a mix of original material and classic jazz standards, with their own bands as well as with each other, in a programme that promises to be both innovative and exciting. And we can expect some surprise guests along the wayl! The CD itself will be cover-mounted on the December/January issue of Jazzwise magazine, which in support of the project has kindly donated some free copies for the evening.

This is a unique gig and a wonderful opportunity for a first glimpse of the next generation of young players - not to be missed. This gig and the scholar programme that created it are part of an ongoing commitment to the UK jazz scene from all the parties involved, with special mention going to Yamaha UK. Yamaha has done much in recent times to support not only grass roots jazz, with assistance to venues such as the 606 Club, but has also instituted an impressive support programme for the teaching of jazz across the spectrum of ages and abilities. For more information on Yamaha’s various programmes take a look at their web site. They’re a good bunch of people.

He has worked with the acid jazz percussionist Snowboy, violin virtuoso Vanessa Mae and was keyboardist and arranger for Jazz chart topping band “Down to the Bone” and includes work with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Michael Ball and “War of The Worlds” on a glittering cv. A great Latin/Brazilian player his remarkable playing is enormously respected throughout the scene. Look out for Neil’s debut album “Havana Club” featuring some of his renowned Latin/jazz original compositions. Also featured tonight will be his storming rhythm section of Davide Giovaninni on drums/timbales/vocals and Davide Mantovani on bass. Quite brilliant.
