Jazz club of childhood dreams! - by Rachel Sutton

9 May 2018

Rachel Sutton Festival

A 606 reflection from singer Rachel Sutton, who will be performing a special Lunchtime gig on Sunday 27th May during our 30 Years at Lots Road Festival. This will mark exactly 30 years to the day since the club opened to the public at its current location.

Walking into the 606 is like walking into the Jazz club of childhood dreams!  That's how I felt the first time I stepped foot in the place.  It's dark, it's cool, and it's oh so Jazz.

Imagine my joy when the wonderful Steve Rubie asked me to do a gig at his famous venue.  YES PLEASE!  I think that was about six years ago and I've been playing there regularly ever since.

There's no pretence at the 606.  What you see is what you get - and it's marvellous.  Beautiful music in a club that was made for the genre.  Steve has created a place where you are made to feel like family.  He has encouraged and nurtured hundreds, if not thousands of musicians and given them a platform. It's a stage for sharing with the audience, sharing with fellow musicians, and watching yourself and others experiment and grow - and all of that is so important when you are an artist.

I must also mention the wonderful staff.  Whether it's a deep and meaningful or a good old giggle, they can give it to you when you need it.

Thank you Steve and all the amazing staff at the 606 - I'm very grateful.  Here's to the next 30 years and beyond!
