More Than Just a Jazz Club - by Claire Martin OBE

For many of us on the UK jazz scene, the 606 Club holds a very special place in our hearts. Not just because it’s a venue where we can perform and develop our art, but also because for some of us it’s where a large part of our musical education was actually learned as we watched and listened, sat in and stayed out late. The club is very special to me for all these reasons and my experiences during those very early days have shaped me as a musician. Being thrilled by the fireworks of Bryan Spring, mesmerized by the wonderful vibe of Russ Henderson, moved to tears by Liane Carroll’s ballad singing and having the opportunity to hear so many greats up close and personal has made the 606 my most cherished jazz venue.
So many unforgettable nights (including my 40th birthday party!) over the last 30 years, it’s hard to express how important the club has been to me. Mega stars like George Benson, Chaka Khan and Pat Metheny dropping by the club have obviously been highlights! I’ve been able to host many charity events at the club over the years and the generosity of Steve and all the audiences has been overwhelming. Together we raised thousands for the Terrence Higgins Trust, Meningitis UK and the Smile Train charity. Steve, James and all the staff are warm and welcoming and there is a palpable sense of ‘family’ about the club that is incredibly special. Massive congratulations go to Steve for his passion, tenacity, and chutzpah! To keep a jazz club going at this standard, for this long is a truly great achievement and I’m indebted to him in so many ways.
