JANDIRA SILVA Born in Rio de Janiero, Jandira is a highly talented young singer whose voice conveys the power of popular Brazilian music. Singing professionally since 1997, her search for wider artistic horizons has taken her from Brazil to Lisbon where she became the resident vocalist at the Casino do Estoril. Now living in London she performs a wonderful selection of rhythmic, enchanting and seductive songs, accompanied by her terrific Brazilian trio ANNISE HADEED Trinidadian Annise Hadeed is a brilliant steel pan player who has taken this most traditional of instruments to new heights of accomplishment. His remarkable steel pan playing has established him as an International artist and his fluent, creative playing has been heard all over the World. Probably best known for his work with the iconic 80’s outfit “The Breakfast Band” he has also worked with the likes of Billy Ocean and Don Cherry and is well known at the Club for his appearances with fellow Trinidadian, pianist Russ Henderson. As well as the classic Caribbean repertoire Annise is also a fluent and creative Jazz improviser in the modern Jazz genre. Performing with his quartet tonight this promises to be a very special gig. Highly recommended. “World renowned” Soca NewsCLICK HERE TO BOOK SIMON WOOLF’S “WOOLF NOTES” Simon, one of the country’s leading Jazz bass players (the big one, not the electric variety), is one of the most musical and tasteful players on the scene, and his band reflect his interest in melodic, straight-ahead, Jazz. The repertoire of the group consists of Simon’s originals plus a variety of classic Jazz standards, all arranged by Simon, and performed by some of the finest players around. Also featured in this line up is the wonderfully talented young sax player Ollie Wilby, definitely a name to look out for. WILL BUTTERWORTH/BILL BRUFORD DUO This is a fascinating pairing of one of the most highly respected of the UK’s contemporary drummers, Bill Bruford, with one of the scene’s rising stars, the pianist Will Butterworth. Since coming to London from his native Scotland Will Butterworth’s thoughtful and creative piano playing has earned him considerable respect and admiration on the local scene. A fluent player he mixes standards, Jazz standards and his own originals to great effect in a set that it is both musically intricate and at the same time direct and swinging. A really exciting musical prospect Will is unquestionably in the vanguard of UK modern jazz performers. Bill’s credentials as a contemporary Jazz drummer are quite impeccable. He first made his name in the late 60’s early 70’s with the eponymous groups “King Crimson” and “Yes”. He pioneered the use of electronic drums in developing the melodic side of percussion and by the mid 80’s he was ready to pursue his love for jazz and formed the first incarnation of his Jazz/Fusion band “Earthworks”. The late 90’s saw the second edition of “Earthworks” and more CD’s followed as electronic percussion made way for the warmer looser style of the more conventional sax-piano-bass-drums line up as Bill continued to bring the best of the young British players to the attention of a rapidly growing international audience. One of the most exciting and innovative players on the World Jazz scene. This set, combining the experience of one of the country’s finest drummers and the energy and innovation of one of the most talented young players on the scene promises to be a fascinating gig of the highest musical standards. Thur 3rd KENNY WHEELER with STAN SULZMANN - sax, JOHN PARRICELLI - guitar Leading the band will be one of the world’s great modern Jazz trumpet players, Kenny Wheeler. Kenny’s melodic, inventive, playing first came to prominence with the John Dankworth Band of the late 50’s and by the mid 60’s he was leading his own groups, as well as working with some of the best musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. By the mid 70’s he was signed to the iconic label ECM, for whom he was to record for the next 20 years, achieving universal recognition as one of the finest contemporary trumpet and flugel horn players in the world. Even now, after more than 50 years, he is still considered to be one of the most influential and creative players on the UK modern Jazz scene. Joining Kenny will be a host of great players, including saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and guitarist John Parricelli. REG WEBB is a wonderful pianist with an absolutely brilliant voice. A charismatic musician his trio performs a mixture of Jazz standards and more contemporary material in a quite unique style. His powerful piano playing and smooth vocal delivery, reminiscent of a cross between Stevie Wonder and the classic Jazz vocalists, drives the trio who count Lenny Kravitz, John McLaughlan, Linda Lewis, Jimmy Witherspoon, Steve Harley, Suzi Quatro, Roland Kirk, and Art Farmer amongst the many artists they have performed with. Resident on the East coast these vastly experienced musicians have been entrancing audiences up and down the country for many years now. Their visits to London are few and far between so my advice is catch them while you can. Sat 5th GEOFF GASCOYNE BAND featuring TRUDY KERR - vocals with Special Guest JAN LUNDGREN - piano Probably best known these days as the bass player with the Jamie Cullum Trio, Geoff is a consummate musician with an extensive cv that stretches from work with the likes of Claire Martin and Guy Barker through “US3” and Bill Bruford to Willard White. His long-standing association with iconic UK singer/organist Georgie Fame first highlighted not only his great playing but also his ability to write and arrange at the highest level. With four CD’s under his own name featuring his wonderful writing and arranging it is fair to say that he is very much more than just Jamie’s bass player. Also featured tonight are the excellent vocals of singer Trudy Kerr and making a rare visit to the UK the wonderful Swedish be-bop pianist Jan Lundgren. Highly recommended. Tammy is a fine Canadian singer, now resident in London, who has been performing to great acclaim in her native Vancouver for some years now. Emanating from a musical background Tammy grew up with music of all descriptions from an early age. However, her love for the American song book has led her firmly in to the area of the classic Jazz standards, which she performs with a wonderful sense of melody and swing. Her debut CD, “Legacy has been universally well received, and has led to appearances on national TV and radio as well as gigs at both the Montreal and Vancouver Jazz Festivals. Highlights in London include playing with Jamie Cullum at the Jazz Café and Ray Gelato at Birmingham Symphony Hall. She has also been chosen as one of the resident singers at the newly re-furbished Ronnie Scott’s. This gig also features one of the country’s great pianists, Gareth Williams (Jim Mullen, Claire Martin). Mon 7th ADAM PHILLIPS and his band featuring JOE BURT ADAM PHILLIPS and his band featuring Joe Burt. Adam is perhaps best known at the Club for his wonderful guitar work with the Hamish Stuart Band, but he also includes work with the likes of Cher, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart and Whitney Houston. And as well as all that, he is also a very fine singer in his own right. Leading a band of some of the finest players in the country, Adam produces a roaring set of great “groove” music. Also featured is the terrific guitarist and singer Joe Burt, and when the two of them get going it’s really something special. RUSS HENDERSON MBE Russ is a wonderful Afro-Caribbean pianist who celebrated his 84th birthday at the Club recently, but who still plays as if he’s 21. Recently awarded an MBE in recognition of the wonderful work Russ has done for the UK music scene over the years he is an accomplished steel pan player as well as pianist and one of the founders of the Notting Hill Carnival. His brand of mainstream piano playing is still truly infectious, and everyone just has fun! Appearing with the band tonight is the fine young vocalist Jane Parker, best known for her work with the band “Lush Life”, who will be joining the guys to sing a selection of jazz standards from the 30’s and 40’s. CLEVELAND WATKISS Co-founder, with Courtney Pine, in the mid 80’s of the iconic band “The Jazz Warriors” multi award winner Cleveland Watkiss has, without question, been one of the most influential singers of his generation. Extremely versatile his smooth, sophisticated, vocals have been heard in an impressive array of different musical settings, from work with the “Who”’s Pete Townsend, through the London Community Gospel Choir to collaborations with the “drum and bass” and “garage” scene. At the same time he has always maintained his powerful jazz roots with work alongside the likes of Jean Toussaint, Julian Joseph and Nikki Yeoh. Demonstrating his great versatility he also starred in Julian Joseph’s groundbreaking Jazz Opera “Bridgetower” to considerable acclaim. The gig features a mixture of classic Jazz standards along with his own, high energy, Jazz originals performed to the highest standards. Booking advised. A powerful and lyrical player, Paul is without doubt one of the leading saxophonists of his generation. Although still in his 20’s, he has already won a number of prestigious awards, including “Most promising young Jazz player”, “Best modern Jazz player” and the American “Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Award”. More recently he has toured the world as the featured saxophonist with the “Riverdance” show and latterly with Matt Bianco. And she is ably supported by some of the finest Latin musicians on the scene, including Don Fiora (bass), Satin Singh (percussion) and Paul Jayasinha (trumpet). One of the best salsa bands working the scene today. Christian Brewer has now established himself as one of the most creative of the saxophonists who specialise in the “post-bop” style associated with the early/mid sixties. He has a fluent, melodic, style which combined with a lovely, liquid, alto sound produces a wonderfully musical and highly enjoyable gig. Performing a mixture of Jazz standards and originals with his quintet, this is always a gig worth catching. SUNDAY LUNCHTIME SPECIAL (1:00pm-4:00pm) SUNDAY AFTERNOON GOSPEL BRUNCH WITH THE **“606 GOSPEL GROUP”** After two years of hosting some of the finest Gospel performers around we decided that it was time that we formed our very own Gospel Group! So, under the auspices of 606 regulars, keyboardist Miko Giedroyc and bass player Andre Gabriel in association with the brilliant Gospel singer and choral director Tracey Campbell, we present our very own 10 piece Gospel ensemble, the “606 Gospel Group”. A brilliant singer it is with great pleasure that we welcome him to the Club. The band perform a terrific mix of “groove” originals and classic covers with an infectious feel that is hard to beat. DAN REINSTEIN American born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90’s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work (www.londonvisionclinic.com) it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again.
