Paul’s fluent and impressive guitar playing has been heard with such Jazz artists as Claire Martin and Jason Rebello. However, demonstrating his impressive versatility he has also toured with “Oasis”, Chris Robinson and the Finn Brothers and is currently the featured guitarist with the iconic rock band “The Black Crowes” whose latest album he has just produced. A powerful performer in the Rock/Blues idiom, there is no doubt that his playing is held in high regard by all who have worked with him. This high energy Rock/blues band also features the searing vocals of John Hogg and the fiery drumming of Jeremy Stacey (Sheryl Crow).

THURS 3rd Liane Carroll **Winner BBC Jazz Awards 2005/6**

FRI 4th JEREMY STACEY with Special Guest JASON REBELLO-piano

A powerful and highly impressive modern jazz drummer Jeremy is equally at home playing pop, rock, funk or straight ahead jazz. His credentials are vast, having worked extensively in the recording studios as well as on many live gigs. Currently the regular drummer with American icon Sheryl Crow, Jeremy is one of the most respected players of his generation. This gig always attracts the best players around and tonight Jeremy’s band will feature Jason Rebello, one of the most impressive and highly regarded pianists on the scene. One of the leading UK Jazz singers for more than 15 years now Christine just gets better and better. With 4 cd’s, numerous gigs and a number of high profile interviews to her name she is without question one of the leading lights of the European Jazz scene. Highly versatile, she has recently gone back to performing her first love, straight ahead Jazz standards with her beautiful clear, rich, voice, and her set is a truly marvellous mix of originals, established and lesser known Jazz classics. MON 7TH RUSS HENDERSON MBE

Russ is a wonderful Afro-Caribbean pianist who tonight will be celebrating his 80+ birthday (not allowed to say exactly which one!) but who still plays as if he’s 21. Recently awarded an MBE in recognition of the wonderful work Russ has done for the UK music scene over the years he is an accomplished steel pan player as well as pianist and one of the founders of the Notting Hill Carnival. His brand of mainstream piano playing is still truly infectious and everyone just has fun! Expect some special guests to turn up to help this highly respected musician celebrate his birthday in true Caribbean style.

TUES 8TH DILL KATZ’S BIRTHDAY BASH

Dill is appearing tonight with his regular band, playing the more contemporary side of the spectrum. Frequently referred to as a “bass legend” Dill is one of the most experienced players on the scene today, having pioneered the use of the fretless bass in the mid sixties, and whose work includes stints with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thompson’s band “Paraphernalia” and Afro/Jazz band “District Six”. Keeping up the tradition of musicians celebrating their birthdays at the Club  Dill will also be inviting many of his musician friend to celebrate his birthday with him so watch out for some great players and a brilliant night! This gig also features the Jazz steel pan of Mick Hutton, the sax of Harrison Smith and the guitar of Leon Stenning

JOHN CRAWFORD

is one of the finest Latin/Jazz pianists on the scene. His unerring musicality and impressive technique have taken him all over the world, including Spain, Denmark, Germany, and the USA. Just to prove his versatility he is also one of this country’s leading exponents of Spanish piano music, and his set tonight will include his remarkable arrangements for piano of some classic Flamenco pieces. was Ronnie Scott’s pianist for more than 12 years, and his strong, swinging, hard-bop piano playing has graced many a fine gig. One of the most established and highly regarded pianists on the scene, John’s high energy, driving, Jazz trio playing is legendary. His jokes are great too!

THURS 10th JULIAN SIEGEL **WINNER BBC JAZZ AWARDS 2007 “BEST INSTRUMENTALIST”**

Award winning tenor saxophonist Julian Siegel is one of the most respected musicians on the UK scene. As well as work with his regular groups, including the long running “Partisans” with guitarist Phil Robson, Julian also includes work with the likes of Hermeto Pascal, Beverley Knight, Cleo Laine, Craig David, Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone and Byron Wallen on a hugely impressive cv. His fluent and creative “post-Coltrane” sax playing has been heard at festivals around the World in the company of US artists such as Steve Lacey, Kirk Lightsey and Wayne Krantz as well as with his own terrific bands. A really impressive player, this gig is always full of excitement and surprise.

FRI 11th VANESSA HAYNES

Originally from Trinidad, where she worked to great acclaim for some years, Vanessa recently made her way to London, which is definitely our gain. She performs a mix of Soul and R&B originals and with her powerful, cultured, voice and her commanding stage presence is quite stunning. She performs with a fabulous seven piece band that features some of the country’s finest “groove” players including bassist Paul Carmichael (Flight), Richard Bailey (Incognito) drums, Tim Cansfield (Seal, BeeGees) guitar and Rob Hughes (sax).

SAT 12th BOBBY WELLINS

is considered to be one of the icons of British modern jazz. Originally from Glasgow, Bobby was on one of the biggest selling jazz albums ever produced in this country, Stan Tracey’s “Under Milk Wood”, recorded in the late sixties. After taking a sabbatical from the music for 7 years, Bobby came back in the early eighties to lead the Charlie Watts Big band, as well as a number of small groups which re-established him as one of the finest melodic saxophonists in the world. His gentle sound and approach are unique, and make for a fine and highly enjoyable nights listening.

SUN 13th GWYNETH HERBERT

One of the most creative and striking performers currently working on the UK scene Gwyn’s soulful, seductive, voice is something quite special, bringing sophistication to the singer/songwriter material, and a wonderful “edge” to the occasional Jazz number. Her first CD “Bittersweet and Blue” on Universal received enormous acclaim and her latest CD “Between me & the Wardrobe”, featuring many of her wonderful originals, has just been released to universal praise and excitement. And just to prove the point, this enormously talented young vocalist with the sultry voice and stylish delivery already includes Sir Paul McCartney, Kevin Costner and Michael Parkinson among her fan base! Quite brilliant.

MON 14th MIRIAM GREY

An old friend of the Club it’s with great pleasure that we welcome back this wonderful singer. Miriam has, over the last few years, established herself as a terrific live performer as well as a session singer in great demand by some of the best performers in the UK. Her cv includes work with Sir Paul McCartney, Candy Dulfer, Kylie Minogue and Dave Stewart and she includes work at the likes of the London Palladium and Ronnie Scott’s. Mim is a highly experienced singer with a beautiful voice that combines power and soul with subtlety and precision to produce a unique and enormously engaging sound. She is also a talented writer who cites James Taylor and Joni Mitchell as her influences and the gig will be a mix of her excellent, melodic, originals combined with some modern arrangements of Jazz standards and some classic R&B and Stevie Wonder added for good measure. A rare visit to the Club by Mim and her band and not to be missed.

TUES 15th

DAN REINSTEINAmerican born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90’s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work (www.londonvisionclinic.com) it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again.

UGO DELMIRANI Originally from Italy, Ugo has been in London for many years now. His Latin influenced modern jazz style has been heard to great effect with many bands over the years, most notably with the acid Jazz vocalist Carmel and artists such as Aierto Moreira,  Steve Windwood, Ronny Jordan and Mica Paris. Probably best known at the Club for his work with Dill Katz and the Jazz/Brazilian band “Samara” this is a great Jazz/Latin piano trio gig from one of the leading lights of the UK Latin scene.

CAROLINE LOFTUS'S "TRIBUTE TO JULIE LONDON"

Australian born but with London very much her home and inspiration, singer Caroline Loftus brings to the Club her tribute to one of Jazz’s most distinctive stylists, US singing star Julie London. To launch her new project, Caroline will combine her own intimate style with her love and admiration of the great 50’s icon by presenting an evening from ‘Julie’s’ era. Along with Caroline’s original compositions songs like Cry me a River, Julies first hit single, help create a musical journey through the much loved swinging favourites and obscure masterpieces originally recorded by Julie London. Also featured tonight will be the excellent pianist and MD Grant Windsor and the brilliant vibes player Jim Hart. “Caroline Loftus….a voice like honey” Sydney Morning Herald.


LEON GREENING

is yet another truly impressive pianist to emerge in recent years. Fluent and melodic his mature playing in the classic be-bop tradition places him without doubt in the vanguard of the British modern jazz scene.

THURS 17th **CD LAUNCH** CLARK TRACEY QUARTET featuring BRANDON ALLEN

Clark is a wonderful drummer who has been on the scene for some years now. Originally featured with the band of his father, Stan, Clark has gone on to establish himself in his own right as one of the country’s leading modern jazz drummers. Playing better than ever these days he produces a powerful, swinging, set featuring some of the finest musicians around. Tonight he launches his latest quartet album “Stiff Upper Lip” on TenToTen Records (his own label) featuring the blistering hard bop sax playing of Aussie ex-pat Brandon Allen  and the brilliant piano of Gareth Williams. FRI 18th **CHANGE OF PROGRAMME** STEFAN REDTENBACHER'S "RB FUNKESTRA"

Austrian born bass player Stefan Redtenbacher has, over the last 10 years, established himself as the UK’s “groove” bass player of choice for many artists, both live and recorded. The roster of artists with whom he has worked includes Steve Winwood, Sam Brown, Danny Gotlieb and Eliott Randall (Steely Dan). He has also established himself as a producer and educator of some note. The band that he leads tonight is his 5 piece “Funkestra”, the name of which pretty accurately describes the high energy style of the music. Boasting some of the best funk players in Europe this band performs original “groove” music with an authority and style that is hard to beat.

is widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading hard-bop tenor sax. players. A big man with a broad sound and great charisma, Don, a veteran of more than 30 years standing on the British Jazz scene, has worked with some of the finest British and American players, including Alan Price, Stan Tracey and Gil Evans. A great guy and a fabulous gig.

SUN 20th **CHARITY GIG IN AID OF THE AV FOUNDATION - ST, JOHN’S SCHOOL, MALAWI** FEATURING CLAIRE MARTIN WITH SPECIAL GUESTS including JIM MULLEN-guitar, LIANE CARROLL-VOCALS, POLLY GIBBONS-VOCALS

Claire is generally considered to be one of the finest jazz vocalists to have come from this country in the last thirty years. Variously described as “..the outstanding voice of her generation” and “.a born musician” this award winning Internationally acclaimed artist has no less than four (!) British Jazz Awards, 11 albums, including numerous “Best Album” choices, and a host of high profile admirers to her name. She has had considerable success on both sides of the Atlantic and is held in the highest esteem by just about everyone on the World Jazz scene. With her husky, perfectly controlled, voice, flawless time and impeccable taste she performs a magnificent set of jazz standards and more contemporary jazz material, in her own, inimitable style. Tonight Clair will be appearing with her trio and a variety of Special Guests including singers Liane Carroll and Polly Gibbons and guitarist Jim Mullen to, as she puts it: “...raise lots of lovely cash for AV Foundation (African  and Asia Venture) which will help St John's School in Milawi. This foundation charity helps children with absolutely nothing to attend schools as well as provide much needed books, equipment and teachers. Education is the only way forward for these kids and the school is in desperate need.” All the money raised will go directly to the charity through Claire’s daughter’s school, Deepdene School in Hove. MON 21st ADAM PHILIPS/JO BURT BAND

Adam is perhaps best known at the Club for his wonderful guitar work with the Hamish Stuart Band, but he also includes work with the likes of Cher, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart and Whitney Houston. And as well as all that, he is also a very fine singer in his own right. Leading a band of some of the finest players in the country, Adam produces a roaring set of great “urban” Blues. Also featured is the terrific bass player and singer Joe Burt, and when the two of them get going it’s really something special

DANIELA CLYNES An old friend of the Club, Daniela is an experienced and versatile Jazz vocalist, lyricist and teacher who is currently residing in New York. Her voice has been heard in many different settings, from the London Jazz Orchestra to the 18 piece vocal group “Shout”. The gig tonight will be a mixture of Jazz standards as well as some new material combining Middle Eastern tunes with African rhythms (now that sounds interesting!).

MICK HUTTON/MARK CHERRIE QUARTET This band features one of Europe’s great bass players, Mick Hutton, who has teamed up with one of this country’s finest Steel Pan players (and also a very fine keyboard player), Mark Cherrie to produce a fascinating set of Jazz/Latin originals and Latin standards. Although a rare instrument in Jazz in this country, the Steel Pan has a long tradition in the West Indies, and Mark certainly lives up to those high standards. Also featured tonight is the guitarist Dominic Grant. Some great players performing a unique gig. Put it in your diary!

BRYAN SPRING is undoubtedly one of the finest modern jazz drummers in the world. His dynamic playing is highly regarded just about everywhere, and musicians dropping in to see him perform are a common sight. Featuring the marvellous pianist Mark Edwards and leading British bassist Andy Cleyndert the trio interplay on this acoustic gig is riveting, producing a range of musical colours and styles that is quite wonderful. World class music.

TOM CAWLEY'S "CURIOS" A former “Young Jazz Musician of the Year” Tom has gone on to establish himself as one of the country’s leading musicians. He has played at the Blue Note Club in New York, Ronnie Scott’s in London, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room and appeared at festivals Worldwide. His mature playing and fluent technique have already made him the pianist of choice for many players, including Charlie Watts, Tim Garland, Dave O’Higgins, singer Gwyneth Herbert and saxophonist Pete Wareham’s award winning “Acoustic Ladyland”. Tonight he leads his own trio that he has affectionately called the “Curios”.

THURS 24th JOHN ETHERIDGE

An iconic figure on the UK Jazz scene, John first came to prominence in the mid 70’s with the classic Fusion band “Soft Machine”. Demonstrating his remarkable versatility this was also combined with a number of years touring with the celebrated Jazz violinist Stephan Grappelli. In recent years he has been busy touring and recording as a solo artists and with his own bands, notably the “Zappatistas” (his tribute to Frank Zappa) and “Sweet Chorus” dedicated to Stephan. A master guitarist he includes work with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Pat Metheny and John Williams on his cv. A great player and a great gig.

FRI 25th “SAMARA”

is a six piece jazz/latin group which I lead, and suffice it to say I think the guys in the band are just great! The pianist, Neil Angilley works with Vanessa Mae and “Down to the Bone”, Dill, the bass player is visiting professor at the Guildhall, Nic the drummer has worked with just about everyone, including “Loose Tubes” and Bill Withers, the percussionist, Dawson is generally recognised as one of the most versatile and experienced players on the scene, and the singer Liliana Chachian, who includes work with iconic dance band “Da Latta” and the influential “Negrocan” is considered to be one of the finest Brazilian singers currently working in Europe. The music is an infectious blend of Brazilian Samba, jazz/latin and Soul, and we all have a great time!

SAT 26th GILAD ATZMON

Gilad is a wonderful sax and clarinet player with a powerful sound and unique approach. His fiery, immensely fluent, playing and remarkable technique have established him as one of the most talented saxophonists in World music, performing a mix of classic Jazz standards and originals with an energy and enthusiasm that is hugely infectious. His most recent CD’s, along with his recently published novels, set him apart as one of the most original and creative players around. Passionate about both his music and his politics Gilad’s gigs are always stimulating both musically and intellectually. Special gig this one.

SUN 27th LUNCHTIME SPECIAL (1:00pm-4:00pm). UNIVERSITY OF LONDON UNION BIG BAND

This band performs classic Jazz standards from the repertoire of Big Bands such as Glenn Miller and Count Basie with some more contemporary material added for good measure. With alumni taken from all the London based Universities and directed by saxophonist Pete Long (Ronnie Scott Jazz Orchestra, Jules Holland) this talented and exciting Big Band is well worth catching. This is our “family” gig so remember small children are most welcome

SUN 27th EVENING (8:30pm) LEA DELARIA

US born multi-award winning stand-up turned actress Lea DeLaria has so many talents it’s hard to know where to begin! After starting her career in San Francisco in the early 80’s she became a successful, if controversial, “alternative” stand-up comedian working the Clubs for some years before moving in to TV and film work as an actress. Through the 90’s she worked regularly in musical theatre, culminating in 1997 with her award winning Broadway performance in “On the Town”. Her powerful voice was soon recognised by Warner Bros records who produced her first Jazz vocal album, hailed by the Times as “..the best Jazz album of 2001”. Now moving between comedy, singing, musical theatre and film acting this unique and enormously talented artist is receiving the attention that she so richly deserves. The gig tonight, under the musical direction of pianist Janette Mason, features songs with a mixture of swing, humour and the faintly kitsch! Absolute must this gig!

MON 28th HAMISH STUART

probably best known for his work as the original lead singer/guitarist with “The Average White Band”, has had an illustrious career as both songwriter and performer. He has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, George Benson and Chaka Khan (for whom he wrote the No. 1 chart hit “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me”) culminating in six years with the Paul McCartney Band. Since ’94 he has led his own band, which is a “super-group” in every sense of the word and very much out of the R&B tradition, although considerably more sophisticated than the 70’s version. It’s great that Hamish likes working at the Club so much as this is always a fantastic night, and definitely requires booking to guarantee a seat

AL WYNETTE BAND FEATURING JANE PARKER-VOCALS Our regular Mainstream quintet featuring Al on trumpet (and occasional vocals!) this is terrific “good-time” jazz featuring music primarily from the twenties and thirties, and great fun. Appearing with the band tonight is the fine young vocalist Jane Parker, best known for her work with the band “Lush Life”, who will be joining the guys to sing a selection of jazz standards from the 30’s and 40’s.

COLIN DUDMAN is an excellent pianist who originally made his name working with the iconic saxophonist Barbara Thompson in her band “Paraphernalia”. After leaving that band in the early 80’s he went on to form the band “20th Century Music” establishing an enviable reputation as a fluent and impressive contemporary pianist. Work with various high profile bands followed culminating in the establishment of the London based rehearsal rooms “The Premises” which he oversaw for some years before moving out of London in the mid 90’s. These days he splits his time between performing, teaching and composing and will be appearing at the Club for the first time in many years with his new quartet

As well as four highly successful albums under her own name she has also recorded and performed with a number of high profile bands and artists, including Kenny Wheeler, Billy Cobham, Dave Liebman and Mercury prize nominated band “Polar Bear”. One of the founders of the award winning “F-ire Collective” in 2006 Ingrid was awarded the prestigious Fellowship for Jazz Composition by the Arts Foundation. Her music is a thoughtful mix of modern and contemporary Jazz, with a clear influence of Brazilian music that she also performs on a regular basis. A creative and focused musician Ingrid’s gigs are always worth hearing.

JAZZ FROM THE ACADEMY FEATURING SAM LEAK-PIANO This gig is being presented in collaboration with The Royal Academy of Music, and is part of the Club’s ongoing policy of providing a platform for the younger musician’s. Each month the best of the students from the Academy’s Jazz course perform a set of standards and original material. Featured tonight will bethe xcellent young pianist Sam Leak with his trio and guests. The playing is of an extraordinary high level, and if you want to spot the next Jazz stars, this is the gig to be at!

is an ex-pat. American tenor saxophonist who first came to this country with the Art Blakey band in the 80’s, and is now one of the most highly regarded modern players on the scene. His blistering technique and lyrical sound have graced many great bands, from Art Blakey through Wynton Marsalis, Gil Evans and the Julian Joseph bands to his own International quartet. A World class musician.
