Steve is without doubt one of the most respected Jazz trumpet players on the scene today. A vastly experienced musician his fluent and melodic playing has been heard with the likes of Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard, Mal Waldron and our own Robin Jones. In addition to his performing he is also highly respected as an educator, teaching at both Trinity College and the Royal Acadamy, as well as being the author of an impressive Jazz trumpet tutor. Tonight he will be featuring the terrific US based trumpeter Rex Richardson. Rex is a world renowned performer and one of that rare breed of musicians who are equally at home with Jazz or Classical music. His jazz credentials include work with the iconic Jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson, as well as Ray Charles, Kurt Elling, Aretha Franklin, Dave Holland, Bill Watrous, Gerald Wilson and countless others. As a classical musician he has worked as a featured soloist with symphony orchestras around the world and has appeared at conferences and jazz festivals on four continents. He has given recitals and masterclasses at the Xinghai Conservatory in China, the University of Melbourne and the Sydney Conservatory in Australia, the University of Thessaloniki, the Royal Northern College of Music, the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University. He is the professor of trumpet and jazz trumpet at Virginia Commonwealth University, holds degrees in anthropology and music from Northwestern University and Louisiana State University and has served on the faculties of Loyola University, Columbia College Chicago, and Delgado Community College as well as visiting professor at Ithaca College. The music the quintet plays is a mix of Jazz standards and originals and is just great!

Pete is highly regarded as both performer, writer arranger and teacher, playing jazz standards in the classic piano trio style, as well as being a marvellous vocalist. In addition to his singing Pete is also a terrific raconteur, making this a wonderfully interesting as well as a hugely musically enjoyable gig. Pete will play tunes from his latest CD, on 33 Records, “The Bad and the Beautiful” which features the superb playing of one of the county’s finest melodic saxophonists, Bobby Wellins who will also be featured on the gig tonight.

Mon 3rd HAYLEY SANDERSON
is a terrific singer who performs an impressive mix of Jazz, R&B and originals with a deft ease. A highly experienced performer she includes work with the likes of Gloria Gaynor and the New Inspirational Gospel Choir, with whom she sang the lead vocal on ‘Down to the River’ that appeared on the album with Mica Paris and Jocelyn Brown. An impressive amount of studio and “bv” work along with tours such as “Strictly Come Dancing” (don’t laugh, it’s a fantastic band) combined with regular appearances at Ronnie Scott’s Club have earmarked this talented young vocalist as someone to definitely watch out for. A really fine singer and well worth catching.

Since the mid-seventies Tim has worked with just about every major UK modern jazz performer and is considered to be one of the most consistent and inventive sax players around. His set is a mix of classic jazz standards and what he likes to term “new standards” such as Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”, with some of his wonderful originals thrown in. Showing dedication beyond the call of duty, Tim has also volunteered to host a “jam session” with impromptu guest musicians being given the opportunity to play with the band for the last two sets of the night.

Austrian born bass player Stefan Redtenbacher has, over the last 10 years, established himself as the UK’s “groove” bass player of choice for many artists, both live and recorded. The roster of artists with whom he has worked includes Steve Winwood, Sam Brown, Danny Gotlieb and Eliott Randall (Steely Dan). He has also established himself as a producer and educator of some note. The band that he leads tonight is his 5 piece “Funkestra”, the name of which pretty accurately describes the high energy style of the music. Boasting some of the best funk players in Europe this band performs original “groove” music with an authority and style that is hard to beat.

Australian born singer Nina Ferro has a warm sensuous voice, full of character, which along with her impeccable timing and stunning vocal range have done much to help her establish an enviable International reputation. Performing at festivals, Clubs and concerts throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia as well as numerous TV and Radio shows she has appeared with some of the World’s great artists, including Tony Bennett, Ricky Martin, and Les Paul as well as appearances with the likes of The Australian Pops Orchestra and The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. RUSS HENDERSON MBE
Russ is a wonderful Afro-Caribbean pianist who celebrated his 84th birthday at the Club recently, but who still plays as if he’s 21. Recently awarded an MBE in recognition of the wonderful work Russ has done for the UK music scene over the years he is an accomplished steel pan player as well as pianist and one of the founders of the Notting Hill Carnival. His brand of mainstream piano playing is still truly infectious, and everyone just has fun!

**EUROPEAN EXCHANGE*** DANIEL SZABO
A seriously talented musician this multi-award winning young Hungarian pianist has established himself as a leading voice on the European Jazz scene. He won the International Jazz Piano Competition in 1997, was joint winner at the Gábor Füsti Balogh Talent Contest for Jazz Pianists in 1998 and came first at the Jas Hennessy Solo Piano Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 2001 he was granted a full scholarship to the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles and received a Fulbright scholarship in 2003 to study at the New England Conservatory in Boston where he got his master’s degree. And if all that wasn’t enough in 2006 he won the International Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition in Paris. His fluent and highly creative playing has been heard with the likes of Joe Lovano and George Russell and tonight he will be performing a selection of Jazz standards and his own originals with his trio. This will be a rare chance to hear this terrific player in the UK and well worth putting in the diary.

One of the finest “Groove” Bands of the last 20 years “Chuck Farley” is actually a brilliant Blues band featuring Steve Simpson-vocals & guitar, Poli Palmer-vibes, Pat Crumly-saxes, Pete Stroud-bass and the redoubtable Sam Kelly-drums (and not a Chuck in sight!). The band was first constituted way back in the 80’s, working steadily through to the early 90’s. There was then a break while all the guys established their own individual careers before they all missed each other so much (aahh) that they decided to get back together again in 2004, and have been rockin’ the scene ever since. The music is a fabulous high energy mix of Blues, R&B and “Groove” which has been described as an “RnB crossover mix with hints of Little Feat meets Ry Cooder meets The Band”. DAN REINSTEIN
American born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90’s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work (www.londonvisionclinic.com) it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again.
DILL KATZ
is appearing later with his regular quartet, playing the more contemporary side of the spectrum. Dill, frequently referred to as a “bass legend”, is one of the most experienced players on the scene today, having pioneered the use of the fretless bass in the mid seventies, and whose work includes stints with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thompson’s band “Paraphernalia” and Afro/Jazz band “District Six”. This gig also features the Jazz Steel Pan of Mick Hutton.

Originally from Glasgow, Bobby was on one of the biggest selling jazz albums ever produced in this country, Stan Tracey’s “Under Milk Wood”, recorded in the late sixties. After taking a sabbatical from the music for 7 years, Bobby came back in the early eighties to lead the Charlie Watts Big band, as well as a number of small groups which re-established him as one of the finest melodic saxophonists in the world. His gentle sound and approach are unique and make for a fine and highly enjoyable nights listening.

IAIN BALLAMY'S "ANORAK"
Iain Ballamy is an Award winning saxophonist who is one of the most interesting and creative players on the World Jazz stage. One of this country’s leading drummers and pianists the multi-talented Gary Husband is generally recognised as one of the foremost musicians of his generation.. "Samara" is a six piece jazz/latin group which I lead, and suffice it to say I think the guys in the band are just great! The pianist, Neil Angilley works with Vanessa Mae, Shirley Bassey and “Down to the Bone”, Dill Katz, the bass player is visiting professor at the Guildhall, Nic France the drummer has worked with just about everyone, including “Loose Tubes” and Bill Withers, the percussionist, Dawson Miller is generally recognised as one of the most versatile and experienced players on the scene, and the singer Liliana Chachian, who includes work with iconic dance band “Da Latta” and the influential “Negrocan”, is considered to be one of the finest Brazilian singers currently working in Europe. The music is an infectious blend of Brazilian Samba, jazz/latin and Soul, and we all have a great time!

Gilad is a wonderful sax and clarinet player with a powerful sound and unique approach. His fiery, immensely fluent, playing and remarkable technique have established him as one of the most talented saxophonists in World music, performing a mix of classic Jazz standards and originals with an energy and enthusiasm that is hugely infectious. His most recent CD’s, along with his recently published novels, set him apart as one of the most original and creative players around. Passionate about both his music and his politics Gilad’s gigs are always stimulating both musically and intellectually. Special gig this one.

This 16 year old jazz crooner and songwriter has been performing in jazz Clubs for nearly two years now. A seriously precocious talent he performs his unique take on popular jazz and pop classics together with some of his own material with a confident ease. He has a rich, powerful voice and swings with a maturity and sensibility way beyond his years. Inspired by jazz legends Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. he is already a favourite of Michael Parkinson. A truly impressive gig from one of the UK's youngest jazz singers.

JEFFREY DANIEL
LA born dancer/singer Jeffrey Daniel first came to prominence in the late 70’s on the US TV show “Soul Train”, an enormously influential show that pioneered the dance techniques of the West coast “street dance” movement. Jeffrey became a renowned and respected pioneer of this style, the most notable convert being Michael Jackson who made the “moonwalk” a universal hit. However, Jeffrey is not only an amazingly talented dancer but is also a terrific singer and the band that he formed with fellow members of “Soul Train”, the highly influential soul/funk band “Shalamar”, became an International success, with 25 million albums world-wide and hit records such as "A Night to Remember" and "I Can Make You Feel Good". With “Shalamar” Jeffrey introduced West Coast Street Dance into Europe, starting a huge “body popping” dance craze and in 1984, after 7 years, millions of album sales and tours around the world Shalamar finally went their separate ways. In 1987 Jeffrey hooked up with Michael Jackson as choreographer and creative consultant, working with MJ off and on for the next 14 years, including work on the videos “Bad”, “Smooth Criminals” and “Ghosts”. As well as Michael Jackson Jeffrey also includes the likes of Paul McCartney, LL Cool J and Vanessa Williams on a glittering cv. Jeffrey is now, once again, stretching out as a solo singer and it is with enormous pleasure that we welcome this iconic performer and his 7 piece funk/soul band to the Club. Booking advised. £12
