Bass player Peter Ind is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable and charismatic musicians on the scene today. He emigrated to the USA in the early 50’s where his phenomenal technique and impressive musical ability, honed by his studies with pianist Lennie Tristano, led to work with Jazz greats such as Lee Konitz, Buddy Rich, Coleman Hawkins and Billie Holliday. He returned to the UK in the mid 60’s where he established himself as a performer and teacher of great distinction, adding a record label, Wave, to his achievements, and then, in the mid 80’s he also opened the internationally renowned “Bass Clef” Jazz Club in London, which he ran for more than 10 years. Tonight we will be featuring the launch of Wave’s “Listening to the Art of Jazz” series which will feature no less than 5 albums from both Wave’s archive and contemporary recordings. Two are re-releases; The New Paul Whiteman Orchestra and District 6 and three are completely new releases, The Duke Jordan Trio recorded live at the Bass Clef, Matt Ross and Edie Thompson piano duo and Peter’s own album featuring both solo and band performances. Joining Peter tonight, as well as his long time associates Tony Barnard on guitar and Matt Wates on saxophone, will be a number of Special Guests to help the launch go with a “swing”, including Matty Ross, Nils Solberg and Rod Youngs. This promises to be a very special night. Booking advised.

Joy’s remarkable vocal talents have been making serious waves amongst those who really know. Although you may not recognise the name, there’s a very good chance you will recognise the remarkable voice, as Joy has been a featured performer with Sting, Bluey (Icognito) and Jason Rebello (Sting). She has finally decided to move out from her highly successful career as a studio singer to front her own band, and what a band it promises to be! With her formidable vocal range and power she produces a set of original material that she describes as “a fusion of Jazz, Soul and Gospel”, which is just awesome (ask Sting!). Supported by some of the best groove players in the country this is seriously good music.
“When Joy Rose joined Sting for a duet she sang with such power and conviction that one could wonder why she did not sing on Sting’s album instead of Mary J Blige. She knocked the audience dead and got a standing ovation” The Current “Joy Rose is yet another reminder that Sting knows the importance of surrounding himself with 'A' list musicians, she is simply breathtaking.” SmoothJazzNow “fantastic” Newsreview

Well known as both a teacher and performer, Anita not only performs jazz standards in her own inimitable style, but she is also universally recognised as one of the best “scat” singers in Europe. In the late60’s/early70’s whilst still at Cambridge University Pete and a young Australian writer called Clive James got together to form a song writing partnership that would eventually produce 6 critically acclaimed albums. Pete wrote the music and performed the songs and Clive wrote the lyrics. The songs were highly original, beautifully crafted, pieces of work and the duo soon had a strong cult following. However, by the mid 70’s with consistent commercial success still alluding them the duo went their separate ways. By the mid 80’s Pete had given up music and become a successful radio producer and Clive, well he went on to become Clive James, the well known Broadcaster and author. However, interest in the music has never waned and in more recent times enough interest in this excellent music, both past and present, has been generated to encourage Pete to return to performing and recording. The new incarnation of the Atkins/James music, best described as “witty and tunefully memorable”, has a more “Jazz” based feel then the original and Pete will be performing tonight with an excellent trio led by pianist Simon Wallace (Ian Shaw) with Mark Hodgson (Julian Joseph) bass and Roy Dodds (Jacqui Dankworth) drums. A rare London appearance of this fascinating unique, artist. Not to be missed. £10

His fluent and melodic playing has been heard with the likes of Steve Grossmann, Kirk Lightsey, Rick Margitza, and Madeleine Peroux and he is also a well respected Jazz Educator. The rest of the band is made up of some of the finest modern jazz musicians in Italy, Pietro Lussu-piano, Vincenzo Florio-double bass, Marco Valeri-drums. The music is a terrific mix of classic “hard-bop” and more contemporary originals played in an assured and enormously impressive style. World Class music and not to be missed. This gig is sponsored by Italian Nights in association with VillaCelimontana/Alexanderplatz (Rome).
Dill is appearing later with his regular quartet, playing the more contemporary side of the spectrum. Dill, frequently referred to as a “bass legend”, is one of the most experienced players on the scene today, having pioneered the use of the fretless bass in the mid sixties, and whose work includes stints with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thompson’s band “Paraphernalia” and Afro/Jazz band “District Six”. This gig also features the tenor sax playing of Harrison Smith.
The famous son of a famous father, Award winning Hungarian pianist Bela Szakcsi Lakatos jnr has carved quite a career for himself since emerging on the European Jazz scene in the early 90’s. An inquisitive approach has seen this enormously talented and wide ranging musician perform music from Jazz/Fusion to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. A highly respected musician in his native Hungary he includes the likes of US musicians Jack DeJohnet and John Patitucci on a vast and impressive cv. A fluent and creative player it is with great pleasure that we welcome this fine musician to the Club.
“Szakcsi Lakatos Bela jnr’s music is full of rich melodies… continually interesting…Recommended” All Music Guide
This gig and the gig above (Tue 13th) are part of an ongoing “European Exchange” initiative promoted by the 606 Club to provide a platform for some of the finest European musicians, in return for which the Club arranges for UK based musicians to perform in the home country of the guest artists. In this way it is hoped that the music of these fine players can be brought to a wider audience around Europe.
SIMON MULLIGAN
Although many Jazz musicians are also trained classical musicians it is unusual for a musician to manage successful careers in both fields. Pianist Simon Mulligan is certainly one who has managed this to great success. At the age of 19 Simon recorded his first classical CD under the direction of Yehudi Menhuin, with whom he was later to successfully work. Since that time he has produced 15 highly regarded CD’s, and included work with the BBC Symphony as well as appearances at the Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Intriguingly Simon’s Jazz credentials are equally as strong, as is his composing work which includes numerous compositions for both TV and Film. The Jazz quartet he leads tonight features some of the finest young jazz players in Europe, including the searing tenor sax of the excellent Frank Walden.
“Pianist Simon Mulligan plays up a storm” Dallas Morning News
Austrian born bass player Stefan Redtenbacher has, over the last 10 years, established himself as the UK’s “groove” bass player of choice for many artists, both live and recorded. The roster of artists with whom he has worked includes Steve Winwood, Sam Brown, Herb Alpert and Danny Gotlieb. His own recordings feature “Jazz/funk” legends Fred Wesley and Elliot Randall (Steely Dan) and he has also established himself as a producer and educator of some note. The band that he leads tonight is his 5 piece “Funkestra”, the name of which pretty accurately describes the high energy and style of the music. Boasting some of the best players in Europe this band performs original “groove” music with an authority and style that is hard to beat.
“The Governor of Bass” BBC Radio2 “..a near perfect slice of jazz-funk bass from one of Europe’s great players” Bass Guitar magazine
Mark is avery impressive musician, equally fluent on both tenor saxophone and clarinet. His flowing, hard-bop influenced Jazz playing, particularly on tenor sax, is a real joy, and his bands always include some of the best players around. A really musical gig from a very fine jazz player.
One of the most creative and striking performers currently working on the UK scene Gwyn’s soulful, seductive, voice is something quite special, bringing sophistication to the singer/songwriter material, and a wonderful “edge” to the occasional Jazz number. Her first CD “Bittersweet and Blue” on Universal received enormous acclaim and her latest CD “Between me & the Wardrobe”, featuring many of her wonderful originals, has just been released to universal praise and excitement. And just to prove the point, this enormously talented young vocalist with the sultry voice and stylish delivery already includes Sir Paul McCartney, Kevin Costner and Michael Parkinson among her fan base! Quite brilliant.
"One of the country’s most exciting talents" Sunday Times “..remarkably gifted performer” Guardian “..majestic-voiced” Jazz UK
Hamish is probably best known for his work as the original lead singer/guitarist with “The Average White Band”, has had an illustrious career as both songwriter and performer. He has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, George Benson and Chaka Khan (for whom he wrote the No. 1 chart hit “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me”) culminating in six years with the Paul McCartney Band. Since ’94 he has led his own band, which is a “super-group” in every sense of the word and very much out of the R&B tradition, although considerably more sophisticated than the 70’s version. It’s great that Hamish likes working at the Club so much as this is always a fantastic night, and definitely requires booking to guarantee a seat.

Trish is a highly talented young saxophonist recommended to me by the great Iain Ballamy, and you can’t get much better than that. One of the scene’s up-coming young players her new band “Tangent”, amde possible due to support of the Musician’s Benevolent Fund and the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, is a fascinating 6 piece that adds vibes/percussion and cello to her existing quartet line up to create music that is full of textures and imagination. The music, inspired by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Lennie Tristano and Maurice Ravel, is primarily originals written by Trish and is flowing, inventive and melodic. Other members of the band include Huw White-Piano, Heidi Parsons-Cello and Ben Bryant-Vibes/percussion.

Thurs 22nd **606 CLUB SPECIAL** THE 606 CLUB ASSOCIATION WITH YAMAHA UK PRESENT **AIRTO MOREIRA** + ARAKATUBA
Brazilian born Airto Moreira is widely recognised as one of the finest percussionists in World music today. A stellar career of more than 50 years has taken him from his first professional gigs in Brazil at the age of 13 to his highly acclaimed bands of today. On the way he has played with many of the finest musicians the Jazz scene has known and won countless awards and polls. After working for almost 10 years (from the age of 16) as a successful musician in Sao Paulo Airto followed the singer with whom he would be associated for the rest of his working life, Flora Purim, to New York. By the late 60’s Airto’s remarkable musicianship had been heard alongside the likes of Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan, Paul Desmond and Joe Zawinul. It was this last musician who was instrumental in changing the course of Airto’s career when, in 1970, he recommended him to Miles Davies for the iconic “Bitches Brew” sessions. Shortly after this Airto joined Miles’s band and toured and recorded with the band extensively for the next two years. Following this Airto was invited to join Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul in the recording of what was to become one of the most influential bands in contemporary Jazz, “Weather Report” and if all that wasn’t enough he then went on to join Chick Corea’s new band “Return to Forever”, which also featured Joe Farrell and Stanley Clarke. By the mid 70’s Airto had formed his own band, “Fingers”, featuring Flora Purim and since then the two of them have toured and recorded extensively around the World. In between touring his own bands Airto has also established a worldwide reputation as the percussionist of choice for a wide variety of the finest musicians around, including the likes of Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, Gil Evans and Michael Brecker. His impact has been so powerful that Downbeat magazine added the category of “Percussion” to its readers and critic’s polls, which he has won over twenty times since 1973. In the past few years he has been voted number one percussionist by Jazz Times, Modern Drummer, Drum Magazine, Jazzizz Magazine and Jazz Central Station’s Global Jazz Poll. In September 2002 Brazil’s President inducted Airto Moreira and Flora Purim to the “Order of Rio Branco”, one of Brazil's highest honours. Currently he divides his time between recording studios and workshops and clinics as well as live performances around the globe. Tonight Airto will be performing his latest SOLO show, just one remarkable man and his array of drums, percussion and vocals. Supporting Airto will be Arakatuba, a 6 piece band led by an old friend of Airto’s and one of the finest percussion players in Europe, fellow Brazilian Bosco D’Oliveira. Also featured in the band are the Brazilian singer Liliana Chachian, saxophonist Dave Bitelli and pianist Ugo Delmirani playing music Bosco describes as “Brazilian roots with a Jazz/Dance approach”. This promises to be a quite remarkable evening Booking advised! £15

Sat 24th DARIUS BRUBECK QUARTETfeaturingDAVE O’HIGGINS-sax
It’s probably fair to say that Darius was born to play Jazz. His father, Dave, is probably one of the most famous Jazz pianists in the world and both his brothers, Chris and Dan, are accomplished musicians. In fact the four of them toured the world as Two Generations of Brubeck and The New Brubeck Quartet. But Darius is considerably more than the son of a famous musician. A highly accomplished, fluent and creative pianist in his own right Darius has been performing with some of the finest musicians in the world since the late 70’s. In that time he also become a Jazz educator of considerable note, most notably establishing the first Jazz degree course in South Africa in 1986, later becoming Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, where he remained until 2006. He is also a fine composer and arranger, with the likes of Wynton Marsalis premiering his works at the Lincoln Centre in New York and the LSO here in London performing a number of his compositions and arrangements. The gig tonight will also feature one of the finest UK saxophonists Dave O’Higgins.

Her own band focuses on Guida’s love for Brazilian music, which she has combined with more contemporary rhythms to produce a wonderful set of primarily original material which is quite wonderful. Although still in his 20’s he is a highly experienced musician, including appearances at Ronnie Scott’s, the Royal Festival Hall and the Groucho Club as well as live broadcast from The Stables, Wavendon with the John Dankworth Band. Bobby is considered to be one of the icons of British modern jazz. Originally from Glasgow, Bobby was on one of the biggest selling jazz albums ever produced in this country, Stan Tracey’s “Under Milk Wood”, recorded in the late sixties. After taking a sabbatical from the music for 7 years, Bobby came back in the early eighties to lead the Charlie Watts Big band, as well as a number of small groups which re-established him as one of the finest melodic saxophonists in the world. His gentle sound and approach are unique, and make for a fine and highly enjoyable nights listening.
