SUN 1st barb jungr feat SIMON WALLACE–piano Variously described as “Britain’s most gifted song stylist” and “one of Europe’s most intriguing and intelligent interpreters of the contemporary song” Barb Jungr has successfully combined the intricacies of cabaret with the power of Jazz to create a unique concept of the popular song. It is little surprise that her 6 CD’s have been variously Album of the Year in The Sunday Times, The Telegraph and The Washington Post. Recipient of the “Best International Artist” in New York's “Backstage Awards for Excellence in Cabaret” Barb is a song stylist whose unique voice and imaginative arrangements are internationally recognised. Tonight she will be performing a collection from her newly released album The Men I Love (NaimLabel), a selection of superb songs from The New American Songbook that she premiered with accompanist, arranger and collaborator Simon Wallace at New York's Cafe Carlyle in a sell out run to rave reviews. Featuring material by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Jimmy Webb, David Gates and more, Barb pays homage to the writers and songs she loves. Kelly began her career singing funk and jazz standards until she was discovered by sax legend George Garzone, who flew her to New York to record vocals for two of his albums. Following the success of these recordings, Kelly joined the band “The Players” and collaborated in writing and recording their acclaimed album From Six Corners. The gig tonight features guitarist Werner Kristiansen, who has worked with Kelly on several projects spanning a variety of musical genres and together they have created some powerful original material, basing their songs on their mutual love for all things funky and soulful. Subtle, yet powerful vocals and excellent guitar playing are the foundation of their sound and tonight they will be backed by some great musicians, utilising the best musicians around to create a great sound that stands out on today’s jazz/funk scene. BRIGITTE BERAHA Brigitte is held in high regard on the UK jazz scene as a ‘musicianly’ singer. Since finishing her studies several years ago the list of names she has collaborated with reads like a who’s-who of the UK jazz scene, including such musical luminaries as Kenny Wheeler, Chris Laurence, Paul Clarvis, Peter King, Julian Siegel, Anita Wardell, Tim Garland, Tim Whitehead, Malcolm Creese and Gwillym Simcock. Her gorgeous vocals stand out when singing songs with lyrics, but the ensemble becomes something really special when she uses her voice like an instrument, blending with the other members of her band to create a unique musical soundscape. An intelligent and highly crafted singer well worth catching. KIT DOWNES : **Winner BBC Jazz Awards 2008/9**. Although still relatively new to the UK Jazz scene this young award winning pianist has already made quite an impact. His fluent, highly creative, focused playing has been heard with the likes of “Troyka”, Clark Tracy, Seb Rochford, Gilad Atzmon, Fraud and Acoustic Ladyland. However, it was his work with the highly successful band “Empirical” that lead to his International recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. With “Empirical” Kit performed at the JVC New York Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and Oslo Jazz Festival. “Empirical” also won 'Best Album of the Year 2007' in Jazzwise, ‘Best Band’ at the Parlimentary Jazz Awards 2008 and 'Best Jazz Album 2007' in Mojo. They have also won the first ever EBU Jazz Competition held at the North Sea Jazz Festival last year, and the Peter Whittingham Award. Since leaving Empirical at the end of 2008 Kit’s trio, featuring fellow Royal Academy alumni Calum Gourlay-bass (Tommy Smith, Tom Cawley) and James Maddren-drums (Marc Copeland, Stan Sulzman, NYJO), has gone from strength to strength and it is that trio which will be performing this evening, performing original music inspired by influences ranging from Bela Bartok to Keith Jarrett to Rufus Wainwright. Highly recommended. THURS 5th Mark Nightingale & Nigel Hitchcock QUINTET Mark Nightingale is widely considered to be one of the finest Jazz trombonists in Europe. He has a powerful and hugely impressive sound and approach, and this is always a great gig. The band tonight features an all-star line-up of Jim Mullen, Laurence Cottle and Jeremy Stacey. Stunning Irish-born vocalist Jessie Buckley first came to the public’s attention during her appearances on BBC1's “I’d Do Anything”, the search for a new leading lady to play Nancy in the musical Oliver! After coming second in the competition (despite being Andrew Lloyd Weber’s choice to win) and gaining a huge amount of praise for her vocals, she went on to star in the West End musical “A Little Night Music”. A gifted musician (she also plays piano, clarinet and harp), she sings a wide variety of musical genres, but tonight’s gig is with her acclaimed jazz project, expertly backed by pianist Joe Thompson ('The best kept secret in British jazz' - Dave Gelly, The Observer) and bassist Rob Rickenberg. After classical piano training at the Royal Academy of Music and despite winning a number of prizes and a scholarship the lure of Jazz proved too strong for John who, in 1986, formed his first Jazz group, “Atlas”. For the next 10 years he worked steadily on the more experimental end of the scene before moving back to more classically influenced music, producing a series of highly acclaimed CD’s based on Jazz and plainchant, performing this repertoire around Europe. In 1996 John formed the first of his “straight ahead” trios producing 4 CD’s and over the next 10 years or so he worked with a variety of the finest UK and mainland European musicians including saxophonists Andy Sheppard, Tim Garland, Julian Siegel, François Corneloup and pianist Jason Rebello, performing at numerous Clubs and Festivals both in the UK and Europe. In 2004 John also composed and arranged for a larger classical/Jazz ensemble, setting his Jazz trio music with a classical horn and string section. The significant critical success of this project led to his being commissioned to compose and perform a large-scale work for the Bath Film Festival. To date John has appeared at over fifty different festivals worldwide and produced over 25 CDs. John's new trio project, OPT (stands for Other People's Tunes!) is a break from the intensity of his “Art of Sound” trio (which plays only his original compositions) with the trio tonight playing arrangements of standards and some of John's favourite tunes by other people. A more accessible, straight ahead trio, this new project promises to be a lot of fun. The trio also features drummer Asaf Sirkis. PETE SABERTON featuring MARK LOCKHEART
