Sunday 10th mark smith memorial concert On Monday 2nd November 2009 the UK lost one of it’s finest musicians and the 606 Club one of it’s most popular and respected performers. He worked with the likes of Leo Sayer, Gonzales, Percy Sledge, Terry Reid, Alvin Stardust, Chris Farlowe, Patricia Kaas, Bryan Ferry, Barbara Dickson, Shania Twain, Zoot Sims, Neneh Cherry, Lionel Richie, Ronan Keating, Charlotte Church, Van Morrison, George Michael and Mica Paris and was at the time of his passing the regular bass player with the Waterboys. As well as a respected player Mark was also a highly skilled studio engineer whose knowledge of the recording software “Pro Tools” was legendary! But it was not just Mark’s wonderful playing that separated him out as someone special. Over the last 15 years or so Mark had became a regular at the Club on his nights off and his relaxed, amiable, good will and wicked sense of humour endeared him to everyone around. A good friend and keen supporter of the Club he was universally liked and admired by all the staff who rightly considered him to be one of the nicest and kindest of people. We, of course, are not alone in that opinion as the quite literally hundreds of postings on his Facebook Memorial Page http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Mark-Smith-Memorial-Page/326780975331 attest to. A true gentleman, kind, considerate and thoughtful, his presence amongst us will be sorely missed. To celebrate Mark’s musical life a number of his friends have got together tonight to perform for him. We have four fantastic bands performing through the evening covering just some of the varied aspects of Mark’s musical life.
