DAN REINSTEINAmerican born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90’s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work (www.londonvisionclinic.com) it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again. This gig also features the excellent trumpet playing of Paul Jayasinha.

Sun 16thSUNDAY LUNCHTIME SPECIAL (1:00pm-4:00pm) with the NAOMI EYERS BAND featuring MIKE GORMAN.
Naomi Eyers is back! The 606 Club’s “Queen of Soul” returns for one gig only with her unique brand of Soul and Jazz. During her 7 year stay in London through the 90’s ex-pat Australian Naomi Eyers established herself as one of the finest Soul/“Groove” singers in the UK. A regular at the Club throughout that period she built up a substantial following (it was on Naomi’s gigs that we had to ban people from dancing on the tables – literally!) and we were all sad when she announced in 2000 that she was returning to her native Adelaide. However, she has kept in constant touch and still manages to fit in the occasional gig, which is definitely very much our gain. These days, as well as an established performer back in Oz she is also a highly regarded educator and her set now reflects her broadening range of musical interests and accomplishments. So as well as the Soul classics she also performs (quite brilliantly) a selection of Jazz Standards and even the occasional Brazilian song! To give some idea of the level at which this wonderful singer works she includes performances at the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena and the Royal Variety Show and has appeared alongside some of the biggest names in music, including Dionne Warwick, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and Arturo Sandoval. Also appearing with Naomi today will be pianist Mike Gorman and his trio. Her set is absolutely riveting and given that this will probably be her only gig at the Club this year an absolute “must see”.

Enormously respected throughout the scene it’s no surprise she was asked to be one of the featured performers at the Barbican’s “Soul Britannia” concert celebrating the hugely successful BBC series in which she was also featured. These days she performs a mix of originals and Jazz standards, or in her words “I perform my own curious songs & poems and some Jazz Songs with the musicians I have had the phenomenal pleasure to work with over the years, sing with Something Secret, The Shout, The UK Funk All Stars and anything that comes along that might tickle my imagination stir my heart and challenge my bones and brain….”. Although many Jazz musicians are also trained classical musicians it is unusual for a musician to manage successful careers in both fields. Pianist Simon Mulligan is certainly one who has managed this to great success. At the age of 19 Simon recorded his first classical CD under the direction of Yehudi Menhuin, with whom he was later to successfully work. Since that time he has produced 15 highly regarded CD’s, and included work with the BBC Symphony as well as appearances at the Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Intriguingly Simon’s Jazz credentials are equally as strong, as is his composing work which includes numerous compositions for both TV and Film. One of the UK’s leading tenor sax players Mornington worked with the Ronnie Scott quintet for almost three years before moving on to work with singer Sarah Jane Morris and the Tracey’s, Stan and Clark, as well as being the driving force behind the remarkable “Celebrating the Jazz Couriers” quintet. He has a powerful and hugely impressive sound and approach. This gig is a rare chance to hear two of the finest saxophonists in World Jazz playing together and is an absolute must for anyone interested in great modern Jazz.
SUN 30th ***Lunchtime Special*** 1:30pm - 3:30pm THE LONDON VOCAL PROJECT directed by PETE CHURCHILL
Directed by composer, arranger and educator Pete Churchill, the London Vocal Project is composed of students and alumni from the various jazz courses at London's Conservatoires. From a solid foundation in Gospel and Groove music, the London Vocal Project has developed into an impressively versatile ensemble with a constantly expanding repertoire. Since its inception in January 2008 it has rapidly become recognised as the leading contemporary jazz-vocal ensemble in the country.
A unique and welcome addition to the Jazz scene, the London Vocal Project has not only a clear identity but the requisite vision and diversity to attract a new vocal repertoire from jazz composers. In addition to regular concerts in venues around London, recent highlights for the group include singing with Dame Cleo Laine and the late Sir Johnny Dankworth at the London Jazz Festival in 2009 (vocal arrangements by J.D.!) and a memorable performance of Kenny Wheeler's vocal suite 'Mirrors' with the great Norma Winstone MBE at the Vortex jazz club.
The London Vocal Project are thrilled to be singing with Bobby McFerrin and Roger Treece in the British premiere of his new album 'VOCAbuLarieS' at the Barbican this month.

SUN 30th WAYNE HERNANDEZ
WAYNE HERNANDEZ is one of those fantastic singers who has been using his considerable talents for many years to make others sound good. Hugely successful within the music “business” he has worked with the likes of Tina Turner, Gorillaz, Tori Amos, Blur, Grover Washington, Roberta Flack and Madonna. He has also toured extensively with Kool and the Gang and Regina Bell. With an Afro Cuban heritage which includes work to this day with the London Community Gospel Choir, along with living in New York for a number of years, Wayne describes his music as “…a living fusion of music styles from the Black music scene”. This multi-talented artist, he is also a well established songwriter and producer, produces a brilliant set of powerful groove music that defines the word “Soul”. A rare talent and absolutely not to be missed.
“..it was clear that Wayne had a very special talent, his voice, it was simply breathtaking” Livemusic.fm
MON 31st In The Groove’s“Soul Reality Band” with special guests mike mayfield and niamh mcnally
Our regular, popular, 'in the Groove' nights feature members of the highly rated Brighton/London based “Soul Reality Collective” playing an accessible mixture of groove based originals and 'soul standards' with special guest singers. The “house band” is MD'd by drummer Mat Hector and includes the exciting guitar playing of Terry Lewis (“Mamas Gun”) and keyboardist Carl Hudson (The Fontanas, Roberto Manzin). Apart from this first class band “In The Groove” nights also feature some of the best young singers of this emerging scene. Appearing on the first set tonight will be Brighton based MIKE MAYFIELD. Although still only 22 Mike is a veteran of the music business. An impressive musician (fluent on both guitar and keyboard) he was described by the Daily Mail as a 'man to watch in 2009' and his singing and song writing skills have already brought him significant critical acclaim. Performing with the band for the second set will be the enormously talented Belfast born singer NIAMH McNALLY. Considered one of the very finest of the 'new' voices on the London scene Niamh can be seen performing regularly with iconic singer Gilbert O’Sullivan. Tonight she will be showcasing her soulful vocals, piano and song-writing skills and suffice it to say that I was so impressed when I first heard her on this gig that I asked her to sing with my band! These gigs promise to be full of energy and fun as well as great performances and are a brilliant opportunity to check out the rising stars of the new “Groove” scene.
