His Award Winning clarinet playing in particular is widely recognised as some of the finest in Europe and with his contemporary approach to the instrument he has demonstrated that this most traditional of instruments can be successfully played in a modern context. Widely respected on the UK scene he includes work with the likes of John Dankworth & Cleo Lane, Peanuts Hucko, Wild Bill Davidson, Jim Mullen and Digby Fairweather. As well as performing Julian has also written over 30 TV jingles and documentary film scores and was taken to Paris to arrange and conduct a big band album for Charles Aznavour. The band itself features the phenomenal piano playing of Neil Angilley (Vanessa Mae, Snowboy, Shirley Bassey) and the dynamic line up is augmented by one of the country’s finest singers, Jacqui Hicks. Performing a combination of excellent funky original material as well as classic Jazz standards this is without question a classy gig.. Sunday 3rd LEA DELARIA feat JANETTE MASON-piano US born multi-award winning stand-up turned actress Lea DeLaria has so many talents it’s hard to know where to begin! After starting her career in San Francisco in the early 80’s she became a successful, if controversial, “alternative” stand-up comedian working the Clubs for some years before moving in to TV and film work as an actress. Through the 90’s she worked regularly in musical theatre, culminating in 1997 with her award winning Broadway performance in “On the Town”. Her powerful voice was soon recognised by Warner Bros records who produced her first Jazz vocal album, hailed by the Times as “..the best Jazz album of 2001”. Now moving between comedy, singing, musical theatre and film acting this unique and enormously talented artist is receiving the attention that she so richly deserves. The gig tonight, under the musical direction of pianist Janette Mason, features a mixture of swing, humour and the faintly kitsch! Absolute must this gig! KIT DOWNES : **Winner BBC Jazz Awards 2008/9** Although still relatively new to the UK Jazz scene this young award winning pianist has already made quite an impact. His fluent, highly creative, focused playing has been heard with the likes of “Troyka”, Clark Tracy, Seb Rochford, Gilad Atzmon, Fraud and Acoustic Ladyland. However, it was his work with the highly successful band “Empirical” that lead to his International recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. With “Empirical” Kit performed at the JVC New York Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and Oslo Jazz Festival. “Empirical” also won 'Best Album of the Year 2007' in Jazzwise, ‘Best Band’ at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2008 and 'Best Jazz Album 2007' in Mojo. Kit himself won the BBC ‘Rising Star’ Award in 2008, was nominated for a British Jazz Award in both 2008 and 2009 and won a 'Yamaha Jazz Scolarship' Award in 2009. Since leaving Empirical at the end of 2008 Kit’s trio, featuring fellow Royal Academy alumni Calum Gourlay-bass (Tommy Smith, Tom Cawley) and James Maddren-drums (Marc Copeland, Stan Sulzman, NYJO), has gone from strength to strength and it is that trio which will be performing this evening, performing original music inspired by influences ranging from Bela Bartok to Keith Jarrett to Rufus Wainwright. Highly recommended. MIKE WESTBROOK’S “OFF ABBEY ROAD” PROJECT feat. KATE WESTBROOK-voice & tenor horn Composer, arranger and pianist Mike Westbrook, who was awarded an OBE in 1988 for services to music, has long been regarded as one of the UK’s most creative and influential Jazz/contemporary composers. Widely admired and respected worldwide, he has over 50 albums to his name and an International reputation that has quite literally taken him around the globe. His settings of the poetry of William Blake, “The Westbrook Blake”, have been described in The Independent on Sunday as “Perhaps the greatest work in all British Jazz.” Mike’s 'Off Abbey Road' project is a re-creation of one of the master works of pop music: The Beatles' 'Abbey Road' album. Premiered in Italy in December 1988 as part of a festival celebrating the Beatles, 'Off Abbey Road' was an instant success with audiences and critics, and the project enjoyed successful tours around Europe until 1991, including a performance to 30,000 people at the 1990 Montreal festival. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' Abbey Road album, the gig tonight brings together some of the outstanding jazz performers associated with Westbrook's music in recent years including Kate Westbrook. Singer and tenor-horn player Kate’s repertoire embraces Contemporary Music and Cabaret, as well as Jazz and Popular Song. She has written libretti for Opera and Music Theatre. Her recent album, Cuff Clout was reviewed in Downbeat magazine- “Westbrook sets her witty and eccentric texts to bold and fascinating genre-crossing music.” Thursday 7th CLOSED FOR A PRIVATE PARTY

DAN REINSTEIN. American born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90’s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work (www.londonvisionclinic.com) it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again. Also featured tonight is the excellent trumpet of Paul Jayasinha. Wednesday 13th HEY BOY! HEY GIRL! FEATURING RAY GELATO AND KAI HOFFMAN Thursday 14th CLOSED FOR A PRIVATE PARTY
The “Queen” of studio and backing vocals you may not know Mary’s name but you will certainly have heard her fantastic voice. Her powerful, soulful vocals have been heard with the cream of the Jazz, Soul, R&B and Pop world, including the likes of Lionel Ritchie, Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, Courtney Pine, Mica Paris, Beverley Knight, Culture Club, Marcella Detroit, Donna Summer, Roy Ayres…..the list goes on. As well as more than 15 years as a studio singer Mary has also featured as a lead vocalist with a number of “Groove” and Dance bands, most notably the band “Up Yer Ronson” (who thought of that name?!). The 2004 release of “Young Hearts” with Kujay Da Da once again brought Mary to the forefront of the Dance Music industry, culminating in her show stopping performance at the 2004 House Music Awards. After many years of making other singers sound good Mary has finally decided to step in to the limelight with her own band, much to the delight of those of us who have known and admired her work for so long. So, if you like great Soul and “Groove” vocals then you definitely have to make it to this gig, you won’t be disappointed, I guarantee it! “ Saturday 16th DAMON BROWN QUINTET feat YUTAKA SHIINA-piano An International recording artist, Damon is unquestionably one of the most talented of the current crop of British trumpet players. A versatile player he is equally at home with pop or Jazz, although jazz is quite definitely his first love. Highly respected on the scene his fluent and highly melodic playing has been heard with the likes of Benny Golson, Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman. The quintet’s set is a mix of standards and original material played in a seriously impressive style and features visiting Japanese pianist Yutaka Shiina. The Guardian described Damon and Yutaka’s previous collaboration as “a coolly authoritative bebop band…light and diaphanous,” so you can expect great things from the gig tonight.
SUNDAY 17th SUNDAY LUNCHTIME SPECIAL (1:00pm-4:00pm) with the ** Yamaha Jazz Experience - Under 15 Winners** "BLUE SHIFT" Tammy is a Canadian singer, now resident in London, who has been performing to great acclaim in her native Vancouver for some years now. She sings a mix of classic Jazz standards and beautifully crafted originals which she performs with a wonderful sense of melody and swing. Tammy's UK highlights include guesting with Jamie Cullum at London's Jazz Cafe, singing with Ian Shaw and Lianne Carroll at the Royal Opera house and performing opposite Kenny Garrett and Curtis Stigers at Ronnie Scotts. It’s a measure of the attention she is now receiving that Courtney Pine chose one of her tracks to play on BBC Radio 2’s “Jazz Crusade” and she was recently a featured artist in “Jazzwise” magazine. Great singer, great gig.
Robin Jones has become something of a regular at the Club in recent times, due very much to public demand. Generally considered to be one of the finest percussion players around, Robin’s shaven head and distinctive earring can be seen in groups from his own “King Salsa” to Top of the Pops sessions and a huge variety of studio work. The Salsa band that he leads at the Club, which also features arrangements and originals from saxophonist Nick Walker, produces a truly infectious Latin vibe which is always rhythmic and exciting. ZOE GILBY “trio” featuring John Critchinson, DAVE CLIFF, ALEC DANKWORTH. John Critchinson was Ronnie Scott’s pianist for more than 12 years, and his strong, swinging, hard-bop piano playing has graced many a fine gig. One of the most established and highly regarded pianists on the scene, John’s high energy, driving, Jazz trio playing is legendary. His jokes are great too! Dave Cliff is generally considered to be one of the finest straight ahead guitarists in Europe. He has accompanied many visiting artists, the great American tenor player Scott Hamilton going on record saying that Dave was one of the finest jazz guitarists he had ever worked with. Alec Dankworth is a terrific musician who first came to prominence with his father, John, but has since gone on to become one of the most respected acoustic bass players on the scene today, including a lengthy stint with the band of Jazz icon Dave Brubeck. Multi-award winning Swiss guitarist Nicolas Meier is one of the rising stars of the UK jazz scene. He has toured extensively in Europe, sharing the bill with the likes of Elvin Jones, Brad Meldau, Trilok Gurtu and Bill Evans and in 2006 his band won the prestigious Grand Prize Of The Jury and 1st Prize Jazz Guitar at Jazz a Juan Revelations. Nicolas draws on a multitude of influences, Jazz, Flamenco, Latin and middle-eastern music and his trademark sound, as heard on his Naim albums, is a mixture of Pat Metheny influenced jazz & spicy Turkish & world music rhythms. Nicolas plays acoustic, fretted and fretless nylon and steel stings guitar, glissentar and baglama, crossing the borders of jazz, flamenco and oriental music to create a music that is at once flowing and beautiful, powerful and unique. BENN CLATWORTHY is a truly impressive modern jazz tenor player who was first brought to my attention by the late Ronnie Scott, who rated him as one of the best UK players that he had heard. Although British (very!) Benn is now resident in California where he has established himself as an important talent, although he does return to Britain on a regular basis. A powerful and impressive player this is a gig not to be missed. One of the most creative and striking performers currently working on the UK scene Gwyn’s soulful, seductive, voice is something quite special, bringing sophistication to the singer/songwriter material, and a wonderful “edge” to the occasional Jazz number. Her first CD “Bittersweet and Blue” on Universal received enormous acclaim and her second CD “Between me & the Wardrobe” was released to universal praise and excitement. Tonight she will be featuring the quite brilliant original material from her recently released magnificent 3rd CD - “All The Ghosts”. And just to prove the point, this enormously talented vocalist with the sultry voice and stylish delivery already includes Sir Paul McCartney, Kevin Costner and Michael Parkinson among her fan base! A Very Special gig this. MIKE JANISCH with special guest SEAMUS BLAKE-sax

He has a stellar band, comprising Mark Fletcher on drums, Neville Malcolm bass and the Award winning Phil Robson on guitar. The band will be playing a mixed set featuring their interpretation of well known standards and some instrumentals, with the emphasis on melodic jazz, driven along by the distinctive Hammond sound. Samara is a six piece jazz/latin group which I lead, and suffice it to say I think the guys in the band are just great! Originally from Glasgow, Bobby was on one of the biggest selling jazz albums ever produced in this country, Stan Tracey’s “Under Milk Wood”, recorded in the late sixties. After taking a sabbatical from the music for 7 years, Bobby came back in the early eighties to lead the Charlie Watts Big band, as well as a number of small groups which re-established him as one of the finest melodic saxophonists in the world.
