Tue 1st - 606 CLUB SPECIAL: TANGO NIGHT WITH BLAS RIVERA, OTTO HANRIOT & PATRICIA MALANCA, WITH PERFORMERS FROM WORLD HEART BEAT ACADEMY

606 Club Tango Night WHBA Blas Rivera Otto Hanriot Patricia Malanca 606 Club Chelsea live music venue jazz club restaurant8:15PM Well, this is exciting! Tonight we will be featuring an evening dedicated to the musics of Jazz and Tango. Sadly, we don't have enough room for the dancers so long associated with the Tango, but making up for that we have one of the finest musicians on the International scene associated with this classic Argentinean art form, saxophonist Blas Rivera. Born in Cordoba, Argentina, Blas took up the saxophone at 16 and after studying piano, sax and composition in his native country moved to the United States to study Jazz and Film scoring at the Berklee College of Music and composition at the New England Conservatory. It was while living in Boston that Blas found his perfect balance of styles, a combination of his mother's love of tango and his father's equally deep love of jazz. As he explains "This was the first time I played with passion, thinking of my country and my parents". Following his studies he moved to Brazil in 1987 where he continued to work on his unique mix of Jazz and Tango, attracting much attention and considerable praise for both his writing and performing. His quintet performed for 3,000 people at the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo and his performance at the Festival Internacional de Londrina in 1994 was widely hailed by critics as one of the finest there. But his major International breakthrough came when he received the outstanding artist award at the 1998 Montreux Jazz Festival, leading to tours throughout Europe and Latin America. This included appearances at La Villette in Paris, Vossajazz in Norway and also at numerous venues and festivals in Spain, Switzerland and Germany. These days, with 7 CD's to his name, including his second live album in Montreux, Blas resides in Spain from where he continues to perform what he calls "a perfect fusion of jazz and tango" as well as teaching music, composition and what he describes as "musicality for choreographers and dancers, helping them develop a deep comprehension of the universality of music, which goes beyond cultural borders". Joining Blas this evening will be one of Europe's finest exponents of Tango, the remarkable singer Patricia Malanca. Originally from Avellaneda in Argentina, Patricia has performed at all the major Tango venues in Buenos Aires as well as touring around the World, including Europe, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In 2013 she released her first CD, “La Malanca”, which was universally well received. Her commitment and passion for the music, and the people, that she loves was aptly summed up when she recently said of herself, "I’m a tango worker and I shall die doing it!" And completing the line-up will be the equally impressive Otto Hanriot on bandoneon (best described as the Argentinean version of the concertina). And if all that wasn't enough, for the second half of the evening these impressive musicians will be joined by students from the World Heart Beat Music Academy, who prior to this gig attended extensive workshops run by Blas and his fellow musicians. This promises to be an evening of high quality music rarely heard here at the Club and highly recommended.

"Blas Rivera: the...Argentine Soul of Jazz" Le Republicain Lorrain; "A revelation" Sonntagsblatt; "Blas is a composer, incredible improviser, musician, teacher and performer - he regales us with stories and enthrals us with music" Eventfinda

Trish Clowes Gareth Williams Glow Quartet 606 Club Chelsea live music venue jazz club restaurant 8:30PM Gareth Williams has unquestionably established himself as one of the country’s leading modern jazz pianists. A fiery and creative player, his remarkable talent has been seen with an impressive array of world-class artists, from Jazz/Hip Hop band “Us3” through to internationally-renowned jazz musicians such as Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Lovano, George Coleman and Jim Mullen. MD for iconic UK vocalist Claire Martin, Gareth has been featured at the Club on many occasions. Described as “one of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition to have appeared in the UK in recent times” multi-award winning saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes has made quite an impact on the UK jazz scene. In 2008 she won the Peter Whittingham Development Award that allowed her to form her first ensemble, Tangent, followed by her eponymously named CD debut on Basho Records. A BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, her second album on Basho was released in 2012, at the same time her ‘Iris Nonet’ was short-listed for the 2013 BASCA British Composer Awards. Her third album, ‘Pocket Compass’, was launched at the EFG London Jazz Festival 2014 alongside the premiere of her first BBC commission “The Fox the Parakeet & The Chestnut” (for which she won the BASCA Award in 2015). Going from strength to strength, her latest album, ‘My Iris’ has been described as “masterful musical wizardry” (All About Jazz). The idea behind the “Glow Quartet” is to bring generations and styles of musicians/music together, playing arrangements of standards and originals from the two leaders. As Gareth describes it, “…it’s an interactive band, taking risks, taking the good stuff from both more traditional improvised music and contemporary ideas”. Also featured with the quartet will be the exceptional rhythm section of Steve Watts-bass and Martin France-drums.

Thu 3rd - THE COALMINERS FEATURING ARTHUR LEA & SUMUDU

The Coalminers 606 Club Chelsea live music venue blues soul R&B club restaurant london uk8:30PM With their dedication to what they like to refer to as “Swamp Soul” this brilliant 6-piece Americana band, with their unique mixture of New Orleans Groove and Funk, bring the rhythm and soul of the deep south (that's Louisiana, not Brighton...) alive. As well as a Jazz/Groove/Blues rhythm section second to none the band also features not one but two fantastic singers in Arthur Lea and Sumudu. The brilliant singer/pianist Arthur Lea has a US solo recording and work with the likes of Bootleg Brass and Soweto Kinch on a massive and eclectic cv and the wonderful Sumudu includes work with the likes of Rod Stewart, Jamie Cullum and most recently the iconic singer/songwriter Van Morrison. And as well as all of that they are both also highly respected band leaders and recording artists in their own right. And the rest of the band is equally as impressive.  Drummer Pat Levett includes work with Ian Shaw, The Puppini Sisters and the Ronnie Scott's All Stars, saxophonist Ben Somers has worked with Dr John, Seal and Taylor Swift, guitarist Nat Martin has recently been performing and recording with the likes of Katie Leone (Incognito) and the award-winning Jo Harman as well as with his own band, and bass player Dave Mannington has performed with the likes of Gwilym Simcock, Tim Garland, Gwyneth Herbert, Peter King and Alan Barnes. If their last gig here is anything to go by this highly impressive line-up are guaranteed to raise the roof. Highly recommended.

Fri 4th - THE KOGO PROJECT

The Kogo Project 606 Club Chelsea live music venue jazz groove funk club restaurant london9:30PM Well, this promises to be a lot of fun. KoGo are the latest, and to my mind one of the best, of the new crop of Jazz/Groove bands to hit the UK scene of late. Led by the Award-winning singer/songwriter Kate Ockenden (Ko) on keyboards and vocals along with husband Geoff Ockenden (Go) on 6-string bass, this is a powerful, sophisticated take on contemporary Groove and R&B that deserves attention. A successful TV and film composer, regularly working for the likes of BBC2, CBBC, CBeebies and Sky TV, Kate has written copious amounts of production music for EMI and scored several independent feature films and documentaries. She won the Yamaha Youth Pop and Rock Awards in 1994, was a finalist in the 2005 BBC New Talent Competition and most recently won the Jazz/Blues category of the UK Songwriting Contest. So it's fair to say she knows what she's doing! As well as KoGo she tours regularly with Britain's Got Talent finalist Julian Smith, is mother to two young children and in her spare time(!) teaches music production, composition and performance at Worcester and Wolverhampton Universities. An in-demand bass player for more than 20 years, Geoff includes work at numerous venues around the country, including regular appearances at Ronnie Scott’s as well as underpinning shows with artists including Chaka Kahn, the aforementioned Julian Smith, Nigel Kennedy, The Average White Band,  The Real Thing, Womack and Womack and Ruby Turner. The KoGo Project itself was founded in the summer of 2014 inspired, as Kate puts it "by a yearning to create honest, original jazz-funk music and perform it live". Although both Kate and Geoff have over 20 years experience of writing and performing this is their first venture together and very impressive it is too. Their debut album "Do It", released in 2016, has been extremely well received, attracting the attention of the likes of Michael McDonald "Brilliant", Bill Sharpe (Shakatak) "Great" as well as Jazz FM who invited them to perform live on the Chris Phillips show. Making up the rest of the band for this evening will be Lee Jones (Larry Coryell, Martin Taylor)-guitar and Julian Chambers (Alesha Dixon, Lemar, Will Young)-drums. Their debut gig here recently was extremely impressive and a lot of fun, so expect a good time and music of the highest quality.

“...knockout, the evening over before you knew it”  Jazz Journal; “Kate Ockenden delivered soulful vocals and funky Rhodes……the standard of playing was excellent throughout…..[an] infectious mix of jazz, funk and soul.”The JazzMann

sun 6th - GWYNETH HERBERT

Gwyneth Herbert 8:30PM One of the most creative and striking performers working on the UK scene, Gwyneth’s remarkable voice is something quite special, bringing sophistication to her singer/songwriter material, and a wonderful “edge” to the occasional cover. Since her first CD “Bittersweet and Blue”, released 10 years ago, she has gone on to produce an immensely impressive series of CDs featuring her brilliant songs, including her last album, “The Sea Cabinet”, which yet again garnered universal praise, being described as “wildly inventive...entirely a law unto itself” (The Metro). And not content with being one of the finest singer/songwriters in the country (really) she has also won two prestigious theatrical awards for her music, had them queuing around the block at the Rochester Jazz Festival in New York, written a song-cycle about the sea which debuted at the Aldeburgh Festival and composed and performed a specially commissioned soundtrack to the silent film “The Patsy”. Most recently she provided the music for "The A-Z of Mrs P" and last year alone saw “A Note to the New Government” commissioned by The London Sinfonietta and The Royal Philharmonic Society; two musical collaborations with artist Mel Brimfield, “The Palace that Joan Built” and “Henry and Barbara – the Musical”; a new theatrical Song Cycle "The Rhythm Method" and the release of her debut record production project, Frances Ruffelle's “I Say Ye-Ye’. And just to prove the point, this enormously talented vocalist includes the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Kevin Costner and Michael Parkinson (and us!) among her fan base. Tonight Gwyneth tells us she will be showcasing brand new material to feature on her forthcoming 7th album, "Letters I Haven't Written", alongside music from past projects and will not only be singing but playing mandolin, French horn and as she puts it "everything but the kitchen sink....and possibly the kitchen sink!". Accompanying her on this musical journey will be the intricate piano of Ned Cartwright and the creative and exciting playing of percussionist and Gyil (balaphone) player Bex Burch, just to add some extra allure to an already special evening. Quite brilliant.

"One of the country’s most exciting talents" Sunday Times; “…remarkably gifted performer” Guardian; “Brilliantly original” MOJO; "...consistently engaging...singing with a rare balance of passion and control… one of Britain's brightest talents." The Telegraph

tue 8th - **606 Club Special - Book Launch** Sarah Gillespie wITH Special Guest: Allegra Huston

Sarah Gillespie 606 Club Chelsea live music venue jazz blues alt country folk club restaurant8:30PM This looks like fun. Joining one of our favourite singer/songwriters this evening in a special gig to mark the launch of her novel ‘Say My Name’ (Harper Collins) will be the US-based writer, screenwriter and producer Allegra Huston. Allegra's previous memoir, 'Love Child', charting her experiences growing up with two famous fathers, film director John Huston and British historian John Julius Norwich, received widespread critical acclaim. "Say My Name", Allegra's first novel, explores an erotic affair between a young man and an older woman with part of the plot revolving around a song entitled "Jasmine", especially written for the novel by Sarah. A unique and creative musical force, Sarah’s style has been described by Rock’n’Reel as “a bracingly eclectic mix of Beat poetry with jazz, folk and Middle Eastern elements”. Her terrific lyrics reflect her passion for politics (she writes occasional political papers and fundraises for numerous causes) and the music is witty, poignant, quirky and swinging. Hailed as one of the major singer-songwriters on the British scene, Sarah has 4 albums to her name, “Stalking Juliet” (2009) and “In the Current Climate” (2011) both received 4 & 5 star reviews in the Independent, the Guardian and the Times, and “Glory Days” (2013) was called “her best mix yet of hooky tunes & smart lyrics” (MOJO) and her latest offering "Roundhouse Bounty" (2016), released on Audio Network, has been universally well received. She has toured extensively in the UK and Europe performing at festivals, theatres, arts centres and headlining at major venues, and has also appeared live on both BBC Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ and ‘Start the Week’ as well as BBC London 94.9’s ‘Simon Lederman’ show. Her first collection of poetry and lyrics is due to be released in November 2017 at the LJF. Sarah met Allegra in 2013 when she was playing the iconic Taos Masa Brewery in New Mexico. As Sarah explains "We became fast friends, driving around the desert playing music by day, drinking Taos whiskey in Allegra's hacienda by night and hanging out with the community of artists and musicians that still flock to Northern New Mexico." This special concert will bring Allegra and Sarah together for the first time in London, with readings by Allegra from her novel and a performance by Sarah of her song 'Jasmine'. As well as this, of course, Sarah will also be playing songs through the evening from her most recent albums as well as a selection of material from her back catalogue, accompanied by her excellent band: Kit Downes (piano), Koby Israelite (accordion/piano), Ruth Goller (bass) and Emiliano Caroselli (drums).

Although born in New Orleans, her desire to sing was really kindled after she moved to New York and bought her first Blues CD, and as she says "it felt like home". She immersed herself in the blues, studying its history, music and greats such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, which led to putting together and landing a residency at the Harlem Grill where her highly lauded ‘Monday Night Blues’ performances were described as "an amalgamation of Tina Turner, James Brown, and Janis Joplin". It wasn't long before she was being asked to perform at various prestigious venues around New York, including one of the hottest clubs in the country, The Box. It was then a short step to being asked to MC The Box's sister Club, The Box-London. Unsurprisingly, performing regularly at such a well-known venue has helped rapidly establish Acantha as an artist of real talent and authority. As well as New York and London, Acantha has performed in Africa, French Guiana, China, Russia, and throughout Europe and has been heralded as a force to be reckoned with by the likes of Sting and Axl Rose. Although Acantha started out singing the Blues, these days her repertoire is more eclectic, and she quotes the likes of Tina Turner, Nina Simone and Jimi Hendrix amongst her many influences. Acantha has already appeared here at the Club with the likes of Mo Pleasure and Dan Reinstein, so we know her powerful and charismatic singing well. It is therefore with great pleasure that we welcome this outstanding artist with her very own band featuring 606 Club regular, guitarist Emlyn Francis (Imaani). Promises to be a "Groove" extravaganza not to be missed.

"Her voice blew me away…She is truly unforgettable.” Jude Law; "She has a soulful voice reminiscent of Tina Turner, Chaka Khan...she's the real deal" Mo Pleasure

Singer Songwriter Producer Kevin Leo 606 Club Chelsea live music venue soul groove club restaurant london9:30PM Kevin Leo first started singing in public at the age of 13 and by his mid teens already had performances for the BBC and a Royal Command Performance under his belt. At 17 he appeared on TV's Opportunity Knocks (the previous incarnation of "Britain's got Talent"), which led to him working regularly with comedian Michael Barrymore on his live shows. Taking himself off to college to get some solid musical theory behind him, he paid his way by singing backing vocals for the likes of Dionne Warwick, Kool and the Gang, Three Degrees, Joe Longthorne, Meat Loaf and M-People. By his mid 20's he was a well established figure in the London session scene, which led him in to artist development and vocal coaching, working with acts and companies such as David Hasselhoff, Pixie Lott, Olly Murs, Chico, Sugababes, Lemar, Kevin Lyttle, McFly, Sony, BMG, EMI, Virgin, Warner and Universal. More recently he has added songwriting and producing to his impressive talents and if all that wasn't enough he also has 4 solo albums, 4 EP's and 19 singles to his name as well. SUN 27th - JOANNA EDEN "THE LATIN IN ME"

Joanna Eden 606 Club Chelsea live music venue jazz latin club restaurant london8:30PM Excellent singer-pianist Joanna Eden has been an established performer on the UK jazz circuit for some years now. Starting originally as a jazz singer in the 1990’s, in 2000 she launched her first CD, “A Little Bird Told Me” at Ronnie Scott’s to enthusiastic reviews and significant airplay on BBC and other national radio stations. Through the early 2000’s she started to focus more on her own compositions as well as continuing to perform jazz standards, and in 2005 produced the self-penned album “My Open Eye”, later released on Universal Records. As a result of the critically-acclaimed reception of that album she was offered supports for both Jamie Cullum and the Buena Vista Social Club and her most recent album, “Falling out of Grace” contains more of her excellent originals. Joanna has also found increased exposure of late due to the praise of one of her former vocal students, a certain Sam Smith (yes, that one) who has been active in helping to promote his teacher's excellent work to a larger audience. This evening Joanna will be performing her specially written show "The Latin In Me", a reflection of her love for Latin music of all types, strengthened by her recent work supporting The Buena Vista Social Club and Omara Portuondo at festivals all over the UK. The music this evening is tribute to the great Latin music and musicians of both the past and present coupled with her own, excellent, originals. Helping her put all this together is a terrific lineup of A-team musicians, including Gerry Hunt (UK)-sax/guitar/flute, Andy Lafone (Uruguay)-bass and Carlos Fuentes (Chile)-percussion. Joanna’s gorgeous voice, infectious joy and unbounded enthusiasm ensure that this is a really lovely, feel-good, gig.
