Huw Warren: Choro Choro Choro ft Tori Freestone
The multi-award-winning Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has, over a thirty-year career, achieved an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making. He has worked with the likes of Kenny Wheeler, June Tabor, the iconic UK band Perfect Houseplants, Iain Ballamy & Chico Buarque and produced more than ten albums, varying from solo albums through folk to contemporary jazz and Brazilian. Awarded the BBC Jazz award for Innovation and the ACW Creative Wales Award he has also written for many ensembles including Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Welsh Chamber Orchestra, RSC, Koch Ensemble and Tango Siempre.
Tonight Huw will be bringing to the Club an ensemble dedicated to one of his great passions, the Brazilian Choro. Choro emerged in the late nineteenth century in Rio de Janeiro as a combination of African music fused with European dances and forms which created a new, uniquely Brazilian urban popular genre. The music, featured on Huw’s recent solo album “Choro, Choro, Choro”, includes compositions from the classic composers of the style through to the great contemporary giants including the inimitable Hermeto Pascoal, as well as several of Huw’s own works. Huw has now arranged the music for full band, of which the flute is an important component, frequently taking on the long, flowing, exciting melodies. Featured on that instrument tonight will be the wonderful Tori Freestone alongside a rhythm section of Conor Chaplin-bass & Corrie Dick-drums. This is a rare chance to hear this wonderful rhythmic, exhilarating, music in the UK and not to be missed.
"Warren’s love affair with Brazilian music…epic…we can only wait in happy expectation for the enlarged…band featuring Tori Freestone on flute" Jazzwise; “it is so inspiring to hear a fresh approach to this music… Beautiful work!" Jovino Santos Neto
