PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT IS NOW ONLY AVAILABLE AS A LIVE STREAM

An evening dedicated to one of the greatest saxophonists the UK has ever produced, the brilliant alto player Peter King, who very sadly passed away earlier this year just a few days after his 80th birthday. After taking the scene by storm in the early sixties with the Ronnie Scott quintet (Peter actually played in 1959 on the opening night of the original Ronnie Scott’s Club), Peter went on to establish himself unequivocally as one of the finest alto saxophonists in the world. His fabulous technique allied with an unerring sense of harmony helped establish him as one of the finest players of his generation and his work with the leading musicians of the day, particularly as the featured saxophonist with the Charlie Watts Band, did much to establish his towering International reputation. As well as a remarkable improviser Peter has also established himself as a writer and arranger of note, with both an opera and a brilliant series of recordings featuring his own string arrangements for classical and jazz quartet. From the early 1990’s, when the Club first moved to Lots Road, Peter was a regular performer at the 606 and for the last 10 years held a bi-monthly residency with a quintet that also featured one of Europe’s leading tenor sax players, Mornington Lockett. A member of Ronnie Scott’s band, Mornington Lockett worked with singer Sarah Jane Morris and the Tracey’s - Stan and Clark – and was the driving force behind the brilliant “Celebrating the Jazz Couriers” quintet. It is this band that we will be featuring this evening, along with the rhythm section that accompanied Peter and Mornington on so many of those gigs, Mike Gorman-piano, Geoff Gascoyne-bass and Mark Fletcher-drums. And if all that wasn’t enough, we will be inviting a selection of Special Guests to join the band through the evening to pay their own, unique, musical tributes to this giant of the saxophone. Booking advised.
