Tribute to Ubuntu Music’s Martin Hummel
Tonight we honour the life and legacy of Martin Hummel, the much-loved founder of Ubuntu Music, who passed away earlier this year after a brave battle with cancer.
A passionate champion of jazz in all its forms, Martin’s influence reached far and wide, from nurturing rising stars such as Camilla George and Mark Kavuma, to giving seasoned greats the platform they deserved. His unwavering commitment to musical excellence and inclusivity helped make Ubuntu Music one of the UK’s most respected jazz labels, with a roster that has included Darius Brubeck, Elaine Delmar, Andrew McCormack and many more.
Martin’s friends, trumpeter Quentin Collins and vocalist Noemi Nuti, have gathered together a stellar line-up of artists wanting to pay tribute to Martin’s vision, generosity and spirit. Confirmed performers include Paul Booth, Luca Boscagin, Darius Brubeck, Alina Bzhezhinska, James Copus, Paul Edis, Camilla George, Mark Kavuma, Tony Kofi, Rob Luft, Dave O’Higgins, Leo Richardson and Vasilis Xenopoulos, with more to be announced.
The Music Charge will be £25/person with profits from the evening being donated to Royal Trinity Hospice in Clapham, whose outstanding care supported Martin and his family in his final months.
Ubuntu, which means “I am because we are”, was more than just the name of Martin’s label; it was the philosophy that shaped his life and career. He brought people together through music, and this celebration will reflect exactly that: unity, joy and the enduring power of jazz to connect us all.
