Art Exhibitions at the 606 - Alexander Hollweg & Martin Grover
The exhibition ALEXANDER HOLLWEG - THE 606 PICTURES has just come down after 10 months in the Members’ Bar. Organised by the wonderful singer and songwriter Rebecca Hollweg, Alexander's daughter, it was the perfect addition to the room that we didn't know we needed until it was there!
A number of photos were taken in the bar area of Rebecca and other musicians through the months and we thought it would be fun to share them with you.
We now have a new collection of artwork to enjoy by the South London painter and screen printer Martin Grover - find out more about him below!
Martin Grover was born in Carshalton and studied at Croydon College, Trent Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools. Now based in South London, he is an accomplished and inventive screen printer. Rather than using photographic and digital techniques, he hand paints his stencils directly onto the screen, creating richly coloured densely layered prints.
His procrastination series reveal sharp observation and a wry humour, while his other paintings, prints and bus stop sculptures are beautifully crafted from observation. An important facet of his work is his portraits of records, informed by a life-long love of music and of collecting old 45’s. Other inspirations include local cityscapes and parks in Brixton, West Norwood and beyond, or anecdotes, poems and songs. About Alexander Hollweg and the Hollweg Family
ALEXANDER HOLLWEG (1936-2020) was an internationally exhibited and celebrated painter and sculptor, and also a semi-professional jazz musician - a multi-instrumentalist and singer who led his own band Dr Jazz in the South West for many years. His work is in many public collections and his large London Life mural lines the walls of the Charlotte Street Hotel.
Alex’s wife GERALDINE HOLLWEG began as a painter, became a scene painter for the RSC, and then a nationally exhibited artist enameler and silversmith.
Alexander Hollweg was the grandson of painter and printmaker EDWARD WADSWORTH RA (1889-1949) a prominent member of the Vorticist movement and the London Group. Edward’s wife FANNY EVELEIGH was a professional violinist with her own quartet and was also a prominently exhibited painter.
Alex’s daughter is the singer and songwriter REBECCA HOLLWEG (pictured with musicians playing at the club) and his son-in-law is the bass player ANDY HAMILL.
