The Duke Revisited - 22/11/25

7 November 2025

Alec Harper

There's been a lot said about Duke Ellington, both as one of the best known and influential bandleaders of the 20th century, but also for his legacy as a jazz composer - his vast catalogue has been continually interpreted by countless artists.

This classic performance by Duke and his orchestra, filmed in Amsterdam in 1958, gives an idea of the breadth of his compositions:

This is a great source to learn more about the Duke and the evolution of his music:

Ellington's relentless inventiveness fueled a lifelong project: continually reimagining and modernising his own compositions.

Listen to his early versions of classic Ellington tunes such as "Caravan" versus ones made toward the end of his life. You'll hear how he adapted his work for the times, making it reflect the attitudes and the moment in which he lived.

On the 22nd of November, come down to the club to hear two fine musicians, Alec Harper & Pete Horsfall, lend their virtuosic, improvisational talents to reimagine the Duke's work for their own time.
