A two-time Ivor Novello award-nominated saxophonist and composer now splitting his time between London and New York, Alex Hitchcock’s impact on the jazz scene becomes more impressive with each passing year. Since emerging as leader, he’s released four solo albums to critical acclaim with the Guardian calling him a ‘virtuoso’ while BBC Jazz World hailed him as “leading the charge in terms of new jazz music being created in the UK.” Citing influences “in the radical tradition” of Black American music, including Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Hazel Scott, Ma Rainey, and Max Roach, his work has been featured on the BBC, France Musique, WDR, Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, and in premier publications such as Downbeat, MOJO, Jazzwise, Musica Jazz, Stereogum, and Uncut. His collaborations, with artists including Ant Law, Empirical and Cherise Adams-Burnett among others, have further showcased his range and creative mastery. For this 606 show, Alex has put together a superb quartet, including longtime collaborator and 2021 BBC “Young Jazz Musician of the Year”, pianist Deschanel Gordon, along with two other exciting players at the top of their game, bassist Will Sach & drummer Luke McCarthy to play music by US composers of the 20th century including Duke Ellington, Geri Allen & Thelonious Monk. World class!
"Alex Hitchcock…a fantastic talent….undoubtedly one of the stars of the future" JazzFM; "Hitchcock…a sax virtuoso... one to watch" Jazzwise; "...perfectly shaped notes and beautiful phrases from the bell of his saxophone. It’s a spellbinding process to witness" The Jazzmann; "Hitchcock combines an awesome technical facility with a keen ear to detect and assimilate a range of classic and contemporary influences…" Jazz Views
