Bass player, composer and arranger Ben Crosland has been leading bands for over 25 years. He has recorded a series of critically acclaimed albums, released on his independent Jazz Cat label, with the cream of UK jazz musicians including Alan Skidmore, Jim Mullen, Mark Nightingale, Steve Waterman, John Etheridge, Martin Shaw, Steve Lodder and Barnaby Dickinson. Tonight he will be launching his latest CD, his second tribute to the Kinks iconic singer/composer Ray Davies (the first was also launched here at the Club in 2016). Featuring Dave O’Higgins on tenor and soprano saxophones, John Etheridge on guitar, Steve Lodder on piano and keyboards, and Sebastiaan de Krom on drums, the Ben Crosland Quintet bring a wealth of experience, flexibility and vision to the interpretations of these wonderful British pop songs. As Ben says, “Strong grooves, a natural swing and strong, evocative melodies characterise Ray Davies’ songs” which allows them to be beautifully re-interpreted in a more contemporary fashion. From straight-ahead swing through jazz waltz to reggae, Ben and the band shine a new light on these classic songs.
