The Solar Water Project is a grass-roots initiative which was founded four years ago by Hamza Farrukh during his college days. Back then, their team was one of the earlier players in providing water, through solar powered energy in Pakistan. Essentially the solution uses solar powered energy to power custom-engineered water pumps, with the capacity and performance to literally provide millions of cups of filtered water for up-to twenty years for under-resourced communities.
They have implemented 13 Solar Projects in Pakistan (10 in Balochistan and 3 in Punjab). They have since created a new product, a solar box, which is a compact and a completely mobile solution to water scarcity and can be shipped to any location in the world. Their first solar box is due to reach South Sudan in the coming days (the first of many we hope) and they have also partnered with an NGO working in the Rohingya refugee camps and will implement Solar Projects there in coming few months. This is just the start of their expansion plan and they hope to keep reaching developing communities globally in an effort to tackle water scarcity and ultimately are working towards creating a global platform to tackle this issue. The charity also run health camps (many volunteers are doctors) and have started working on tree-plantation drives and sustainability projects with schools. Since March 2018, the team has grown and are now based in Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, New York, Vancouver and London. The charity is run solely by non-paid volunteers who are either students or full-time working professionals.
