Chris Coull Quartet ft. Imogen Ryall "Songs From Porgy and Bess"
An evening of world-class music that is both accessible and sophisticated! Trumpet & flugelhorn player Chris Coull is the Musical Director of “The Speakeasy Jazz Club” and “Jazz at St Andrews” in Hove, Sussex. Together with award-winning vocalist Imogen Ryall and their quintet, the performance tonight presents music from their new recording, “Songs from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess”. With fresh arrangements of much-loved classic songs such “Ain’t Necessarily So”, “I Love You Porgy” and of course “Summertime” as well as rarely heard gems “Buzzard Song”, “Prayer”, “Strawberry Woman” and more, the show will take you through time to 1930’s Charleston, telling the love story between down on his luck ‘Porgy’ and the sassy ‘Bess’. While embracing the traditions of the post-bop jazz movement, this reimagined programme is dynamic, swinging and above all thoughtfully hip! Featuring John Turville-piano, Simon Thorpe-bass and Matt Fishwick-drums.
“Great collection of tunes from Porgy and Bess by Chris Coull, love the arrangements and vocals by Imogen Ryall. Chris’s plays beautifully throughout." Ralph Moore; "the honey-toned…voice of Imogen Ryall…combines…effortless precision with a warm, inviting sound, drawing the listener into her beguiling world” London Jazz News
