Dan Reinstein with Special Guest Rachel Z :: Dill Katz Photo 1

8:00pm DAN REINSTEIN  American born but British educated, saxophonist Dan Reinstein first began playing at the old 606 Club on Kings Road when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was impressive, and after taking time off from his medical studies to attend the Berklee School of Music he became even more remarkable. Dan returned to the US in the early 90s where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped performing, and when he returned to London to live and work it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again at the Club. Also featured tonight will be Shanti Jayasinha on trumpet as well as Dan’s very special Special Guest Rachel Z Hakim on piano. Compared to jazz legends Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, highlights of Rachel’s career include working with Wayne Shorter on his album “High Life”, which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. From 1988–96 she played keyboards and piano with fusion band Steps Ahead founded by vibes player Mike Mainieri, among an All-Star lineup including saxophonist Michael Brecker and drummer Steve Gadd.  Rachel toured with Peter Gabriel (Genesis) from 2002-2006 and also toured and recorded with drummer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington as part of her Grammy-winning Mosiac Project in 2014/15. Truly a superstar we are delighted to welcome Rachel to the 606.

…impressive hard-bop saxophonist” Time Out; "Rachel Z is an improviser whose spontaneous playing is by no means eclipsed by the work of presiding geniuses such as Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner" John Fordham, The Guardian

9:45pm DILL KATZ is appearing later with his regular quartet, playing the more contemporary side of the spectrum. Dill, frequently referred to as a “bass legend”, is one of the most experienced players on the scene today, having pioneered the use of the fretless bass in the mid sixties, and whose work includes stints with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thompson’s band “Paraphernalia” and Afro/Jazz band “District Six”. This gig also features the excellent guitar playing of Leon Stenning.

“Superior jazz-rock quartet led by ex-Nucleus electric bassist Katz” Time Out
