Edgar Macias Band: Tribute to Buena Vista Social Club
UK-based Venezuelan pianist Edgar Macias has established himself as a sought-after pianist in a variety of musical styles, from jazz to salsa. His vast and impressive cv includes work with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, David Murray, Scott Hamilton and Bobby Wellins and tonight he will be showcasing his tribute to the iconic Cuban band The Buena Vista Social Club. The band and the Grammy-winning album of the same name released in 1996 became a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million records. Featuring Chris Bowden-sax, Mike Green-bass/vocals, Miles Levin-drums, Néstor Pedrales-percussion/vocals plus two Special Guests for this special EFG London Jazz Festival show, Cuban percussionst/conguero Diosdado Heachavarría and Venezuelan vocalist/guitarist Ernesto “Renán” Uquillas this project is Edgar’s “take” on that album, offering fresh and inspired arrangements playing to the strengths of this superb ensemble. The result is not a replica, but a living, breathing reimagining of the music—where improvisation, rhythmic dialogue, and cross-cultural influences bring fresh energy to these celebrated compositions. If you like Latin music you will love this!
