Hans Mathisen Quartet Photo 1

Hans Mathisen is one of Norway's leading jazz guitarists. His 2005 album, “Quiet Songs”, was the recipient of the Spellemannprisen, Norway's equivalent of the Grammy Awards, and his 2014 record, "The Island", which featured Jason Rebello on piano, was another beautifully conceived and rendered outing that's since become a critical and audience favourite. A consummate musician, Hans’ previous performances at the Club with Jason were a standout for many. With a style broadly consistent with the “ECM sound” (in reference to the iconic European label of the same name), Hans’ deeply melodic yet sophisticated approach also has origins in American jazz, both as a player and composer. Therefore, it is wonderful to have this truly impressive improviser at the Club again leading his own superb quartet featuring the excellent Jamie Safir-piano (Emma Smith, Ian Shaw), master musician Yuri Goloubev (Ralph Towner, Gwilym Simcock)-bass & the internationally acclaimed Asaf Sirkis (John Abercrombie, Tim Garland)-drums.

"Mathisen...exquisite original melodies, exquisite interplay and exquisite solos” JazziNorge; “…truly a manifestation of the great capacity Hans Mathisen has, as a composer, arranger and guitarist” Nettavisen/ Dagsavisen Norway; "Safir plays with wonderful judgment, delicacy and alertness" London Jazz News; "Goloubev…astonishing playing…a great jazz bassist" Libertà; “Sirkis…one of the world’s premier drummers” All About Jazz
