Jazz Champions ft Clark Tracey
““...one of the most impressive jazz drummers in Britain today””
The Times
Clark Tracey is an excellent, highly experienced, award-winning drummer, bandleader, composer and arranger. Originally featured with the band of his late, great, father Stan, Clark has gone on to establish himself in his own right as one of the country’s leading modern jazz drummers. He has recorded over 90 albums (9 as a leader) and performed in over 50 countries. Awarded the "Best Drums" title five times in the British Jazz Awards and Ronnie Scott's Award for “Best Drums” in 2007, Clark received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music and the promotion of jazz. Tonight, alongside a stellar band that features Alex Garnett & Simon Allen-saxes, Dave Newton-piano and Andy Cleyndert-bass Clark will pay tribute to his drumming hero, Roy Haynes, who recently passed away at the age of 99. An inspiration to every generation of jazz drummers, Clark set about collecting every recording of Haynes as a teenager and transcribed, studied and emulated his style for many years. From Lester Young in the 1940s, to Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, John Coltrane and many more, Roy's special signature style, christened "snap crackle" in the 1950s, was a constant in the output of jazz for decades. Don’t miss this spectacular lineup for what will be a very special evening.
"Tracey is a world-class musician whose mature and distinctive artistry – his own “ snap-crackle” – is right up there with the likes of Philly Joe Jones and Roy Haynes". Jazz Journal
