Jim Mullen Quartet ft Roberto Gatto
A multi-award winner, including a special Honorary Parliamentary Jazz Award in 2017, Jim Mullen is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz guitarists in Europe. Originally from Glasgow he made his name playing with a number of seminal bands through the 70’s and 80’s including Brian Auger’s “Oblivion Express”, The Average White Band and his own highly acclaimed jazz/funk band “Morrissey-Mullen”. A prized sideman as well as leader beloved by many, Jim also includes work with the likes of Mose Allison, Jimmy Witherspoon, Claire Martin and Georgie Fame. Jim just celebrated his 80th (!) birthday here at the Club and we are delighted to welcome him back, featuring an internationally recognised musician with an extraordinary CV as his special guest: Italian drummer Roberto Gatto. Roberto has worked with literally dozens of the best jazz musicians in the world, from Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, Vince Mendoza and Kenny Wheeler to Peter Berstein & the Brecker Brothers along with leading his own projects and winning numerous awards along the way.
Roberto first met Jim back in the 80’s, the beginning of a mutual admiration society that has flourished ever since! Fittingly, for this 606 show, two of the finest UK players, pianist Gareth Williams and bassist Jeremy Brown will be completing the quartet for what will surely be a night of inspired, next-level musicianship and good feeling.
“One of the great Jazz guitarists working today” Jazzwise; “World-Class” Guardian; “Roberto Gatto has had a remarkable career spanning more than half a century and crossing genres, languages, and generations of Italian (and international) jazz. A Roman drummer with an inexhaustible personality, Gatto has written essential pages in the story of our music” UK Jazz News
