Jim Mullen's 80th Birthday Gig
On November 26th, the legendary Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen celebrates his 80th birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than with a special night of music here at the 606! A master of touch, tone and swing, Jim has long been hailed as “a true giant of British jazz guitar,” with fellow musicians and critics alike praising his “unmistakable voice” and “effortless fluency.” Originally from Glasgow he made his name playing with a number of seminal bands through the 70’s and 80’s including Brian Auger’s “Oblivion Express”, The Average White Band and his own highly acclaimed jazz/funk band “Morrissey-Mullen”. A prized sideman as well as leader, Jim also includes work with the likes of Mose Allison, Jimmy Witherspoon and Georgie Fame on a stellar cv.
Joining him for this milestone gig will be some of his long-standing musical partners —brilliant pianist Gareth Williams, powerhouse bassist Laurence Cottle, and the ever-grooving drummer Tristan Mailliot. The evening promises to be a heartfelt celebration filled with great music, warm memories, and plenty of birthday spirit as a host of special guests, such as the likes of Claire Martin, Zoe Francis, Hamish Stuart, Mornington Lockett & Nigel Price drop by to honour one of the UK’s most influential and beloved jazz musicians.
