“You’ll be charmed, humoured, enticed and tickled! Music executed with accuracy, delicacy, emotional depth and energy”

BBC Radio 3

This is a remarkable, genre-defying, band put together by the great pianist Mark Edwards (Dave Stewart, Katie Melua, Carleen Anderson, Terry Callier, Daryl Hall, Aztec Camera) which achieves that impressive feat of being both playfully humorous and masterfully musical at exactly the same time. As Mark, a very old friend of the Club, says "I knew the sound I was after, a bunch of jazz musicians who’ve formed a tango group and then run away with the circus!" So, to that end, he put together a frontline of accordion, violin and saxophone, combined with an array of other eclectic instruments to add further character to the sound, including banjo, xylophone, ukulele and glockenspiel. And, like the band, the material is also eclectic in its scope and genre, from film composers Ennio Morricone and John Williams through classical composer Fauré and contemporary performers such as Tom Waits to straight ahead jazz artists such as Brad Melhdau. And as the band has grown and developed the music has also expanded to include a significant number of excellent original pieces from the extremely talented group of musicians that Mark has gathered around him for this project. Mark has made a point of using players all from the Brighton area (where Mark himself is based) which helps give the band a real feel of cohesion and unity. The music itself has been frequently described as ‘cinematic’ with influences from jazz to tango to klezmer, producing a beautiful, melodic, acoustic sound with intricate ensemble playing intertwined with lyrical improvisation. Tonight will feature music from the band's debut album "Sawdust and Spangles" launched here at the Club in 2016, a labour of love recorded over 2 years and captured meticulously on vintage recording equipment at the Retreat Studios in Sussex. The diverse group of multi-instrumentalists who make up the band that is the Cloggz are: Mark Edwards piano/accordion/moog/ukulele, Imogen Ryall-vocal, Neil Corin-accordion/xylophone/vibes, Julian Nicholas-sax/clarinet/penny whistle, Richard Jones-violin, James Osler-guitar, Terry Pack-bass and Darren Beckett-drums. Without question one of the highlights of the month this promises to be a unique event and definitely worth booking for.

"You’ll be charmed, humoured, enticed and tickled! Music executed with accuracy, delicacy, emotional depth and energy" BBC Radio 3; "Engaging, wonderfully quirky, a coherent bridge between jazz and film music in a swaggering Kurt Weillish ambiance" Jazzwise Magazine; "When The Cloggz play it’s not so much a gig as a musical voyage. The result is mesmerizing" Brighton Argus;  "extraordinary...as genre defying as Loose Tubes...the music sets out to...delight, in a juxtaposition of musical styles that are carefully and skilfully arranged...deserves to be heard and savoured... Sawdust & Spangles comes unreservedly recommended" Jazz Views
