Matt Anderson Quartet Photo 1

Winner of the 2017 Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition, London-based saxophonist Matt Anderson & his quartet present music from his latest album, ‘The Town and the City’ at the Club this evening. Embracing the whole spectrum of the jazz tradition as well as rhythms from around the world and ‘more pastoral, spacious and folk-influenced sounds’, Matt will be accompanied by one of the leading pianists of his generation, the award-winning John Turville (Tim Garland, Julian Arguelles), along with bassist John J Williamson & drummer Jay Davies. In addition to leading his own group, Matt has worked with artists such as Greg Hutchinson and Ivo Neame as well as the Gareth Lockrane & Calum Gourlay Big Bands, and teaches at Leeds Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music. A fine, thoughtful and dynamic player.

“...unmistakably British straightahead music, cleanly melodic in shape” Jazzwise; "Anderson’s tenor saxophone tone is rich and warm” All About Jazz; “The album succeeds thanks to a combination of consistently excellent playing and intelligent and varied writing. An excellent example of how wide-ranging the contemporary saxophone quartet can be.” The Jazz Mann
