“a force of nature”

Observer

Sarah Jane Morris’ enviable career spans from early 80s, politically active bands The Republic, Happy End and the Communards (“Don’t Leave Me This Way”) through to her current international success as a singer/songwriter of undeniable stature. Concert highlights have included a Swing Ladies concert with Chaka Khan and Monserrat Caballe, a performance in front of 10,000 fans in Athens, a European Tour with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, numerous sell-out weeks at Ronnie Scott's and the “What Women Want” concert with Sinead O'Connor and Chrissie Hynde at the Royal Festival Hall. As a solo artist, she’s released over 15 albums and achieved three Number One hits in Greece and several Number One hits in Italy, including a cover of Barry White's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

This evening sees Sarah Jane return to the 606 with her latest collection of original music, “The Sisterhood”. A representation of Sarah Jane’s roots, inspirations, and indefatigable love of contemporary music-making and its iconic pioneers, ‘The Sisterhood’ celebrates twelve female stars who dominated the singing and songwriting of the 20th century – Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Rickie Lee Jones, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush and Sinéad O’Connor, therefore altering the course of musical history. For this, she’s chosen three remarkable musicians to join her: her long-time collaborator, co-writer and co-producer, guitarist Tony Remy (Courtney Pine, Jason Rebello, Julian Joseph), British blues singer, songwriter and guitarist Marcus Bonfanti (Hamish Stuart, Ginger Baker) and bassist/singer Henry Thomas (Paul Weller, Billy Ocean, Randy Crawford). Sarah Jane’s performances are always magical and this new programme promises to be one of her best yet.

"A voice that can excite shivers of passion and delight … Soaring, swooping, sensual and sophisticated, this voice is more than a style, it’s a force of nature” Observer; “Sarah Jane Morris.... mesmeric” Guardian; “...a vocal Titan” The Star Phoenix, Montreal; “The Sisterhood sees Sarah Jane Morris at her most bold and accomplished.” Record Collector
