Stan Sulzmann (Album Launch)
A brilliant saxophonist with an instantly recognizable sound Stan Sulzmann's CV reads like a who’s who of jazz, including work with the likes of Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Mike Gibbs, Marc Copeland, the New York Composers Orchestra and Gil Evans. At the forefront of the European modern jazz movement since the late 60’s Stan commands an enormous amount of respect not only for his great playing but also for his compositional originality. Tonight he is bringing to the Club his new Organ Quartet to launch their debut album "Shadow Painting", released on Jellymould music. Originally formed by Stan for a BBC broadcast for the 2013 London Jazz Festival the Organ Quartet plays a mixture of his original tunes and “cunning” re-workings of standards, putting a contemporary spin on the jazz tradition. The band itself features, unsurprisingly, four of the most outstanding musicians on the European Jazz scene, Nick Smart-trumpet, Ross Stanley-organ and Tim Giles-drums. These four incredible musicians produce music of real beauty that is both vibrant and delicate. Stan’s hallmark robust yet lyrical sound is complemented by Nick’s flowing, fluent, trumpet playing, Ross’s expressive Hammond accompaniment, which often shimmers and swirls underneath the surface and Tim Giles’ tasteful bustling grooves which give the group real momentum. A special night this in the company of some special musicians.
